This one-year certificate program (47 credits) is to prepare you for employment in entry-level information technology (IT) employment. The certificate builds skills in many areas critical to the success of employment in IT.
Course emphasis is placed on current concepts of computer programming, server administration, database, Cisco networking, and general business-required education.
All courses in the certificate are found in the CIS AAS Degree. This certificate will benefit those who want to:
- Be prepared for entry-level or mid-level jobs in desktop/server administration.
- Be prepared for entry-level or mid-level jobs in computer programming.
- Be prepared for entry-level or mid-level jobs in database programming and administration.
- Be prepared for entry-level or mid-level jobs in basic Cisco router or switch administration.
Network Administrators install, configure, and support an organization's local area network (LAN), wide area network (WAN), and Internet system or a segment of a network system. They maintain network hardware and software, monitor the network to ensure network availability to all system users, and perform necessary maintenance to support network availability. They may supervise other network support and client server specialists and plan, coordinate, and implement network security measures.
This occupation is expected to grow much faster than the statewide average. Total job openings are projected to be somewhat higher than the statewide average.
Computer Programmers write detailed instructions that list the steps the computer must follow to organize data, solve a problem, or do some other task. They test programs to be sure instructions are correct and will produce the desired information. If errors occur, programs must be changed and rechecked until they produce the correct results. They prepare instruction sheets for computer operators who will run the programs. Applications programmers write software to handle specific jobs. System programmers maintain the software that controls the operation of the entire computer system. Website programmers create and maintain interactive websites.

Completion of MTH 095 or placement test scores indicating MTH 105 or higher and WR 121 or higher is required.
It is strongly recommended that CIS certificate- (or degree-) seeking students have access to a personally-owned, 64-bit Windows 7/8 (or newer) laptop with at least 16 GB of RAM, 1-2 TB hard disk, and other standard laptop accessories. You can purchase a full version of Microsoft Office in the UCC bookstore at a very low, discounted student price.
