Group will study Medical Education as part of Open World program.

ROSEBURG, Oregon – Umpqua Community College (UCC) is preparing to host a group of educators from Ukraine as part of a program called Open World. The delegates’ mission while they are in Roseburg will be to study best practices for medical education. Along with their studies, they will participate in a variety of campus and community events during their Oct. 12-19 visit.

The delegation of Ukrainian University and Government Professionals consists of five people who will be accompanied by a bicultural facilitator and an interpreter. During their time in Roseburg, the delegates will meet local medical educators, health services students, and service providers. Additional activities include a visit to Oregon Health Sciences University, the OMSI Science Center and a trip to our beautiful Oregon coastline. The delegation will stay with local families who serve as hospitality hosts.

“This is our 13th Ukrainian Open World delegation,” Jason Aase, UCC’s Dean of Career and Technical Education, said. “The 2018 delegation focused on STEAM education, interacting with both K-12 and college students, which forged partnerships that continue today. This year’s delegation is focused on post-secondary medical education in the U.S., and we are excited to showcase our efforts both locally and statewide.”

The Open World Leadership Center is an agency of the U.S. Congress. Prior to arriving in Roseburg, the participants will complete an orientation in Washington, D.C., which will include policy meetings with Members of Congress and include staff from the Offices of Senator Jeff Merkley and Representative Peter DeFazio.

More than 29,000 current and future leaders from post-Soviet era countries have participated in the Open World program. Open World offers one of the most effective U.S. exchange programs to promote mutually beneficial options for depolarized engagement between future national leaders.

“Our community continues to be enriched through this cultural and professional exchange, and we look forward to more vibrant exchanges and further partnerships,” Aase said.
