ROSEBURG, Oregon – Umpqua Community College (UCC) is preparing to host a group of educators from Ukraine as part of a program called Open World. The delegates’ mission while they are in Roseburg will be to examine STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) Education and CTE (Career and Technical Education). Along with their studies, they will be participating in a variety of campus and community-wide events during their Oct. 12-21 visit.

The delegation consist of five professionals who will be accompanied by a bicultural facilitator and a bilingual interpreter. The delegates will collaborate on best practices for promoting STEM and CTE.  This is the twelfth time UCC has hosted Open World participants.

“UCC is excited to continue this long standing relationship between Uzhhorod National University and Kremenchuk National University,” Jason Aase, UCC’s Dean of Career and Technical Education, said. “Our community is enriched through this cultural and professional exchange, and we hope the Ukrainian delegates return home better for their experience, both personally and professionally.”

Along with several activities and meetings at UCC, delegates will also meet with various Douglas County government leaders, as well as the leaders from the Umpqua Band of the Cow Creek Tribe of Indians. Additional activities include meeting with Oregon Department of Education staff, learning about local STEM education from the Umpqua Valley STEAM Hub, and touring Phoenix Charter School of Roseburg and the Career Technical Education Center in Salem. The delegation will stay in local homes with community members serving as hospitality hosts—allowing them to experience American family life.
