Getting Started - Professional Truck Driving

The minimum requirements for a CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) permit in Oregon are:

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Must have a valid Oregon driver’s license
  • Must have at least one year’s driving experience
  • Must pass the CDL knowledge test, airbrakes, & combo vehicle
  • Must present a valid Medical card
  • Must have a social security number and one other piece of personal identification

The following steps must be completed for entry into the UCC Professional Truck Driving Program:

  1. Attend a UCC Truck Driving Info sessions held weekly when campus is open in the CWT Office. Please check in at the CWT reception desk. (map)
    1. Tuesdays at 2 p.m. - Go to Zoom meeting.
    2. Thursdays at 9 a.m. - Go to Zoom meeting.
  2. Complete the Commercial Truck Driving (CTD) application and work history included in your UCC Truck Driving Packet provided at the Info session.
  3. Obtain a court print copy of your driving record (MVR) from the DMV (Fee $3.00). Form included in packet to mail to Salem. You must have your medical card before DMV will issue your permit. If you have held a license in more than one state in the past five years, a driving record from each state is required.
  4. A copy of the Oregon Commercial Motor Vehicle Pamphlet is included in your packet or can be picked up at our office or the DMV or can be read or listened to online at the DMV website. You need to pass the General Knowledge test; sections 1, 2, 3 and 11, and Air Brakes section 5 and Combination Vehicle section 6.
    1. CDL Permit Requirements: Students must have a CDL permit ($23.50) before starting the class.
    2. General Knowledge Test $10
    3. Combination Vehicle Endorsement (no charge)
    4. Airbrakes Endorsement $10
    5. The general knowledge test takes about 2 hours and each test after may take from 30 minutes to an hour. The DMV will not test after 4:00 PM Monday through Friday. The CDL Instruction permit is valid for 12 months from the date of issuance.
  5. Return a stamped copy of (DMV) receipt or a stamped copy of test score for acknowledgment of required endorsements to CDL Program Coordinator at the UCC Community & Workforce Training Office.
  6. Return the CTD application, work history, driving record, authorization for release, drug screening policy to:

  7. Provide payment or confirmed funding source in order to secure your training spot.
  8. Drug Screen and Physical – Upon preliminary acceptance into the program, you must pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) Physical and DOT pre-employment drug screen with a negative result. Drug Screen must be done within 15 days of class start date. The fee for the physical will vary and the drug screen will be approximately $60.
