The Surveying Pathways Certificate provides an opportunity for career advancement for employees already working in the field through technical training, provides a career and educational pathway for high school students interested in surveying or engineering, and provides a career and educational pathway for people desiring a technical position in surveying and engineering.
Coursework includes three courses in Surveying, Land Description & Cadastre, and elementary functions, with a combined 19 credit hours of courses. Students completing the pathways certificate will be prepared for an entry level position on a surveying field crew.
The required courses for the pathways certificate are included in the one-year completion certificate for Engineering and Drafting Technician and two-year AAS program for Civil Engineering and Surveying Technology. Students completing the drafting pathways certificate may continue with the one-year completion certificate, two-year AAS, or two-year Engineering: University Transfer program (depending on math level), if desired.

Students completing the surveying pathways certificate are most likely to be employed on a surveying field crew as a surveying technician. It is important to recognize that this certificate can complement or provide pathways to other career opportunities such as engineering technicians, and the training provided with the certificate may increase promotional opportunities for people already employed in the field.
Average beginning salaries for surveying technicians are generally in the range of $13.50 to $18.50 per hour depending on experience and other factors. Job demand for trained workers in this field is related to the amount of construction and development that is occurring in the area. People interested in this career field should be prepared to consider the possibility of relocating to gain initial experience, as this is a high demand position in areas where significant development is occurring.
There are also multiple career pathways for people with surveying and mapping backgrounds. Examples of some related careers are available on the Oregon Labor Market Information Website for Surveying Technicians and Civil Engineering Technicians.
