The UCC Library gets a furniture makeover thanks to a generous grant.
ROSEBURG, Oregon – Recently students have noticed an exciting change to the Umpqua Community College (UCC) campus. Thanks to the College’s Title III Student Success grant, couches were added at the end of September to the UCC library. These couches benefit students of all body types, and provide extra comfort to those studying. Each couch comes with power outlets and connecting tables that allow students to charge their laptops and write up assignments with ease.
Carol McGeehon, Director of the UCC Library, believes it’s a wonderful addition that gives students an alternative study format and provides a welcoming learning atmosphere.
“A big thank you goes out to Title III Student SUCCESS, who made this all happen,” McGeehon said. “There has been an increase of students in the Learning Commons versus previous Fall terms. These couches cater to all, and that’s what we really strive for.”
Title III Student SUCCESS is a program that’s main focus is providing students with the necessary outlets and environment to learn. The five-year grant has a total of $2.2 million, and goes toward improvements on campus.
SUCCESS stands for “Students of UCC Engaging in Strategies for Success.” The grant is intended to purchase objects that will improve persistence and graduation rates. Recently, this grant purchased Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) computer stations, new monitors, USB outlets, and more. These additions, along with the new couches, are believed to strengthen our institution.
“This program really cares about the students, and their achievements,” Dr. Cynthia Horkey, Title III Student S.U.C.C.E.S.S Project Manager, said. “We are evaluated every year, and we hold forums available for students to attend so we can get direct input. Success should be an option for everyone. This grant’s goal is to improve UCC, not sustain it. Addition is key, whether it be adding extra comfort in students’ lives, or providing new technology in classrooms. We believe these additions will help students grow. We are on our last year of the grant, but more funds will be coming in. We really hope the students are satisfied with our work.”
