SUPPORT UCC ATHLETIC PROGRAMS
The RiverHawks athletic teams are excellent ambassadors for the college and do more than just put on a uniform and represent Umpqua Community Colleg at sport venues across the northwest and other parts of the country. Our athletic teams and staff invest in the campus and in the communities of Douglas County through campus engagement and community service.
To begin, the RiverHawks are actively involved in the planning, construction and up-keep of the Umpqua Community College Health and Wellness Trail. Not only does this project enhance the beautification and accessibility to our campus, the trail encourages people to partake in healthy living. This trail is a bark covered path that will include work-out stations along the path, as well as signage for distances. The path has loops with varying distances that enable a person to set their own degree of difficulty. The path will be available for use to employees, students and members of the community.
The second initiative that the RiverHawks are involved in is their community service platform called “Champions in the Community”. This service platform includes many different community service projects that serve people from Douglas County. For example, in the 2016-17 school year, the RiverHawks athletes read to first grade classrooms at Winchester Elementary School on six different occasions and donated over 300 books to the children, as part of the “Champions Read” program. This program is set to be expanded to two other Douglas County Elementary Schools in the 2017-18 school year. The expectation is that the RiverHawks Department of Athletics will spend close to 2000 hours in the community during the 2017-18 school year poromoting reading and literacy.
Both of these initiatives serve multiple constituencies and benefit many people in Douglas County, but need additional funds outside of what the UCC Department of Athletics and their strategic partners can bring together.
A challenge is extended to you to help support our RiverHawks as they continue to represent UCC, attract students to campus and make meaningful connections in the community. For every 30 athletes recruited to UCC, our academic programs grow and campus services expand.
