Beginning January 11, the Umpqua Community College Small Business Development Center will sponsor "Profit Mastery: Creating Value and Building Wealth," an internationally-acclaimed seminar for owners, managers, and advisors of small businesses. It will be held at the Workforce Training Center, 2555 NE Diamond Lake Blvd., Roseburg. The program is designed to help owners and managers of small business better understand financial management and increase their chances of success in today's difficult economic times. "Statistics show that over half of all businesses that fail each year do so despite reporting profits and record sales. The most successful businesses have found that the key to long-term success revolves around effective financial management. The UCC Small Business Development Center is committed to the long-term success of the small business community in Douglas County by providing this kind of education," said Pete Bober, UCC SBDC director. This six-week program will include presentations on financial statement analysis, cash flow planning, planning for growth, cost, volume and pricing issues, and determining the right kind of financing for your business. Participants will practice teaching points by using case studies and discussing real-life examples. For more information about this program, please call Glenn McDuffy, UCC SBDC Small Business Management Program Coordinator at 541-440-7751.

UCC multi-media art shows displays perception's power in single moment

The Art Gallery at Umpqua Community College is excited to present "Mapping Affection"; a group show curated by UCC Fine Arts faculty members Renee Couture, M.F.A. and Sandee McGee, M.F.A. This show displays seemingly quiet works that map moments and memories, places and spaces, objects and impressions through drawing, painting and photography. Each artist yields to time and allows for detailed observations and careful movements to accumulate on the surface of their images. The artists' works express a desire to be present within a singular moment and to understand the power of perception. The works range from meditative and intuitive to highly organized systems of thought. Careful details within the works compel the viewer to take a closer look and to contemplate the hand of the artist. The revelation within this exhibition lies in the discovery of time stopped through the simple act of observation. Featuring works by Jessica Curtaz, Sally Finch, Charlene Liu, Carly Piccarello, Kerri Rosenstein, Alexandra Ryckman, Harriet and Lisa Solomon, "Mapping Affection" includes works by emerging as well as established, regional and national artists. "Mapping Affection" is on display September 12 - October 27, 2011. Reception is October 20, 2011 from 5.30 - 7.30 p.m. The Art Gallery is located in the Whipple Fine Arts Building at Umpqua Community College. Gallery hours are 8 a.m. - 4 p.m., Monday through Friday or by appointment. There is no admission charge. For more information, contact Sarah Link at 541-440-4691.

Umpqua Community College's year-end "Prix Fixe" dinners are coming up soon, with meals on May 27 and June 3.
Two teams of culinary arts students perform all the work. They design, purchase to a budget and prepare the menu, provide the service and make settings and decorations for each meal. "Prix Fixe" means fixed price and often indicates a very elegant, multi-course, one-entrée meal, as it does here.
This is the third year in a row these meals have been served to the public under the overall direction of Chef Chris Van Dyke, UCC's culinary arts director. One key role the public (the diners) performs is the grading the students for the evening by scoring the dishes by course, the quality of service, the timing of the service and the consistency of the theme. The public's grades will become one-half of the students' grades for this project.
