This is a general guide for research in the areas of Nursing and general health information, and for students enrolled in courses related to these subjects. You'll find suggested reference books, subject databases useful for searching for articles from journals and magazines, sources for topical background information, and suggested World Wide Web sites and resources.

EBSCOHost Databases
Off-campus access to these EBSCOHost databases is available to users with a UCC Library card. Please ask at the circulation desk in the library for a complete list of database usernames and passwords.

Academic Search Premier
Multi-disciplinary database of full text articles and abstracts from magazines and peer-reviewed journals including those in the field of nursing, medicine and their related disciplines.

CINAHL with Full Text
Provides indexing for over 2700 nursing, allied health and health sciences journals and includes full text for more than 300 journals and lots more information.

Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition
More than 550 scholarly full text journals focusing on a wide range of medical disciplines. Health Source also does indexing and abstracts for nearly 850 journals.

Alt HealthWatch
Coverage of complementary and alternative medicine issues with access to over 140 full text publications including peer-reviewed journals.

MedLine
Medline provides access to article abstracts covering authoritative medical information on medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, the health care system, pre-clinical sciences, and much more. Created by the National Library of Medicine, Medline allows users to search abstracts from over 4,600 current biomedical journals.

Other Online Databases

Thomson Healthcare Academic
Drug abstracts, medical reference, and more online in full-text. Access is available only to faculty of healthcare-related programs and students currently enrolled in these programs. See your instructor or a librarian for the username and password.

LexisNexis Medical
The medical section of LexisNexis Academic provides access to full text articles from medical and health news sources and journals as well as article abstracts from Medline and the National Library of Medicine. LexisNexis is not available off campus.

Black’s Medical Dictionary

The Merck Manual
Manual of identification, diagnosis and treatment of diseases and disorders. REF 615.02 M

Handbook of Diseases
Concise reference covering over 600 diseases. Each entry discusses such things as causes, signs and symptoms, diagnosis and different treatments of various diseases. REF 616 H

Human Diseases and Conditions
A four-volume subject encyclopedia with entries on diseases that contain background information as well as suggested keywords for additional searching and color illustrations. REF 616 H

The Encyclopedia of Infectious Diseases
"This book is designed as a guide and reference to a wide range of infectious diseases and their causes, and to additional information and addresses of organizations that deal with infectious disease." REF 616 T

Atlas of Human Anatomy
Large labeled and detailed illustrations of the human anatomy with a detailed index in the back of the atlas. REF 611 N

Clinical Diagnosis and Management by Laboratory Methods, 20th ed.
A resource of scientific information in virtually all aspects of clinical pathology and laboratory medicine relevant to patient care, health promotion and disease identification and prevention. REF 616.075 C

Conn’s Current Therapy
Provides practicing physicians and other health professionals with a concise reference for the most recent advances in therapy and the treatment of conditions commonly encountered in a clinical setting. REF 615.5 C

Clinical Oncology

The Merck Index
An encyclopedia of chemicals, drugs and biologicals with over 10,000 entries. REF 540 M

PDR-Physician’s Desk Reference
Comprehensive pharmaceutical information with entries for some 3,000 pharmaceuticals. Includes manufacturer’s index, brand and generic name index, product category index and identification guide with pictures. REF 615 P

Complete Guide to Prescription & Nonprescription Drugs
Gives information on pharmaceuticals and nonprescription drugs including dosage and usage information, possible adverse reactions, warnings & precautions, and possible interaction with other drugs or substances. REF 615.1 G

PDR for Herbal Medicines
This resource provides information on over 700 botanical remedies and nutritional supplements. Covers trade names, adverse effects, pharmacology, and summaries of clinical trial results, among other information. REF 615.321 P

The Encyclopedia of Medicinal Plants
"A practical reference guide to more than 550 key medicinal plants and their uses." Includes color photographs, habitat and cultivation information, and key preparations. Appendices include a glossary and index of plants. REF 615.32 C

Gale Encyclopedia of Nursing & Allied Health
Over 850 entries relevant to nursing or allied health students that covers specific diseases and disorders, tests and procedures, equipment and tools, body systems, nursing and allied health professions, and current health issues. REF 616 G

Gale Encyclopedia of Surgery

NOTE: Evidence-Based Nursing has been extensively explored and written about in the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada. As a result, some of the resources listed below come from institutions outside of the United States and may suggest guidelines that differ from practice in the U.S.

Medline Plus
Health and drug information for health professionals and consumers from the U.S. Library of Medicine at the National Institutes of Health.

PubMed
“A service of the National Library of Medicine that includes over 15 million citations for biomedical articles back to the 1950’s. These citations are from MEDLINE and additional life science journals. PubMed includes links to many sites providing full text articles and other related resources.”

National Center for Health Statistics
Provides access to Health, United States, an annual report on national trends in health statistics.

National Library of Medicine

The National Library of Medicine (NLM) is the world’s largest medical library. The Library collects materials and provides information and research services in all areas of biomedicine and health care.

National Institutes of Health

Federal focal point for medical research in the United States. Site has sources for all kinds of information of interest for health professionals and consumers.

National Center for Biotechnology Information
This site has information on genetics and includes a number of databases including GenBank, a gene sequence database, OMIM: Online Mendelian Inheritance In Man, and access to MEDLINE and PubMed.

HealthWeb
Directory of evaluated non-commercial, online health-related resources from the Greater Midwestern Region of National Network of Libraries of Medicine.

Medscape
Provides clinicians and other healthcare professionals with the most timely source of clinical information that is highly relevant to their patients and practice; includes news and peer-reviewed articles. Must register to use this site.

State Health Facts

Statehealthfacts.org is a project of the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation and is designed to provide free, up-to-date, and easy to use health data on all 50 states. Data is available on hundreds of health topics.

OBGYN.net
OBGYN.net offers a directory of websites dealing with topics such as "breast care, endometriosis, hysterectomy, infertility, menopause, osteoporosis, pregnancy, and other women's health topics," and its content is monitored by an advisory board of international physicians. Includes a glossary of acronyms.

National Women’s Health Information Center
Website dedicated to resources for women’s health issues from the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services.

Women’s Health Topics
Resources and information on women’s health topics from MedlinePlus and the National Institutes of Health.

OncoLink at The University of Pennsylvania

Martindale’s Anesthesiology & Surgery Center
Directory of links dealing with all aspects of anesthesiology and surgery including links to journal websites as well as dictionaries, encyclopedias, atlases and other websites on relevant subjects.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
The CDC serves in developing and applying disease prevention and control, environmental health, and health promotion and education activities in the U.S. Their website has links to information on health and safety topics including articles, data and statistics

Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry
Performs specific functions concerning the effect on public health of hazardous substances in the environment. Includes databases and information on toxic substances and toxicological profiles.

Food and Drug Administration
FDA is a regulatory agency with information on human and animal drugs, cosmetics, foods, toxicology, medical devices, radiological health and inspections and imports.

Nutrition Data
NutritionData (ND) generates nutrition facts labels and provides simplified nutritional analyses for all foods and recipes. ND tells you what’s good and bad about the foods you eat, and helps you select foods that best meet your dietary needs.

USDA Nutrient Database
Searchable database to find nutrient information on different foods.

Vaccine Information
Comprehensive information for public and health professionals from the Immunization Action Coalition. Includes information on travel vaccines.

Oregon State Board of Nursing
Includes links to licensing information, the Nurse Practice Act, Oregon Revised Statutes Act for nurses, Oregon Administrative Rules, RN/LPN Nursing Education Programs and much more.

Evidence-based evaluations on the cost and effectiveness of similar prescription drugs provided by the Office for Oregon Health Policy and Research.

InteliHealth Drug Resource Center
Drug information for consumers as well as on related topics such as reading drug labels, safety and addiction issues, provided by Aetna Insurance.

Drugs@FDA
A searchable database from the Food and Drug Administration that offers information about approved prescription drugs, some over-the-counter drugs, and discontinued drugs. Includes drug approval letters, labels, and review packages.

Approved Drugs Listing
Search for the most recent drugs approved by the FDA listed by medical area. Also search by year of approval.

RxList: The Internet Drug Index
Search by drug name or by keywords including side affects and drug interactions. Also has listings of the top 200 drugs dispensed and sold last year.

HerbMed
The Alternative Medicine Foundation, a non-profit organization, provides free access to summaries of research articles pulled from PubMed and other sources on 45 popular herbs used for medicinal purposes. Additional herb information is available for a fee.

The Alan Guttmacher Institute (AGI)
"With an emphasis on teenage sex and pregnancy, this site provides statistics, policy papers and reports relating to abortion, law and public policy, pregnancy and birth, prevention and contraception, sexual behavior, sexually transmitted infections (STI) and HIV, and youth. Site also includes the institute's newsletters with several years' worth of archives. Users can create tables of U.S. and international statistics from databases compiled by the institute. Planned Parenthood Health Services of Southwest Oregon
Provides information and public access to a full range of safe, effective, confidential, reproductive health care services as well as community education programs for Southwestern Oregon.

Assisted Reproductive Technology Reports

An independent humanitarian medical aid agency providing medical aid where needed and raising awareness of the problems of the people they help.

Family Health International
A non-for-profit organization committed to helping women and men have access to safe, effective, acceptable and affordable family planning methods, preventing the spread of AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases and improving the health of women and children.

UNICEF
The United Nations Children’s Fund-working for the benefit of children worldwide in addressing many issues including those related to health.

International Medical Volunteers Association
