LITERATURE RESOURCES

This is a guide for research in literature and its various sub-genres, and for students enrolled in related courses (such as Shakespeare). You'll find suggested reference books, subject databases useful for searching for articles from journals and magazines, sources for topical background information, and suggested World Wide Web sites and resources.

Literary Reference Center
Literary Reference Centeris a completely full-text database that combines information from over 1,000 books and monographs, major literary encyclopedias and reference works, hundreds of literary journals, and unique sources not available anywhere else.

EBSCOHost Academic Search Premier
Multi-disciplinary database of full text articles and abstracts from magazines and peer-reviewed journals including those in the field of literature and literary reviews.

Oxford English Dictionary Online
The Oxford English Dictionary is the accepted authority on the evolution of the English language over the last millennium. It is a guide to the meaning, history, and pronunciation of over half a million words, both present and past. It traces the usage of words through 2.5 million quotations from a wide range of international English language sources. This is an online searchable edition of the dictionary that is consistently being updated.

Encyclopedia Britannica
Online version of the Encyclopedia Britannica that is a comprehensive general reference work covering a wide range of subjects including literature, literary movements and authors.

Gale Literature Criticism Series
Multivolume collections of literary criticisms broken down by time period or genre. Below is a listing of the various criticism collections that we have in our reference collection. Each one has an index for the series in each volume or you may use the Gale’s Literary Index Online website to search for criticisms by title or author. Cambridge History of American Literature
Eight volume reference work covering the history of prose, poetry and criticism in the United States in detailed essay form. REF 810.9 C

World Literature and Its Times
Five volume set on world literature giving profiles of notable literary works and the historical events that influenced them. REF 809 W

Oxford Companion to Classical Literature

Chaucer MetaPage
A webportal dedicated to gathering together scholarly and curricular resources on Chaucer from across the web. Includes links to the full text of Chaucer's works, and audio files of scholars reading Chaucer in the original Middle English. Hosted by the University of North Carolina.

Luminarium: Anthology of Middle English Literature (online)
A collection of resources related to the major authors featured in the Norton anthology, maintained and updated since the site's inception in 1996.

The English Renaissance in Context
An excellent site from the University of Pennsylvania and the National Endowment for the Humanities that features interactive examinations of original texts and historical documents side-by-side online to allow students to study comparative works of the period first-hand. Includes sections on: Romeo & Juliet, Merchant of Venice, King Lear, Richard III, and the Making of Books.

Shakespeare in Quarto
The British Library has digitized 93 copies of the 21 plays by Shakespeare printed in quarto before the theaters were closed in 1642. Compare versions of the same play side by side. Read background information about the quartos; view a timeline; click on links to other Shakespeare web resources.

Internet Movie Database
This website provides extensive listings of films both foreign and domestic, as well as the ability to look up actors, writers, and directors for free.

ScreenSite
A web portal with resource links for students researching film studies programs in the United States as well as the general film lover who is looking for local film festivals.

Google Video
Search a collection of thousands of video clips, many which can be accessed for no charge. Includes free access to the Archive of American Television's interviews with famous actors such as Michael J. Fox.

Motion Picture Association of America
"The Voice and Advocate of the American Motion Picture, Home Video, and Television Industries." Includes information on film ratings.

American Film Institute
Official website for the American Film Institute, which includes AFI's list of 100 Greatest Movies

Wikiquote: Film Quotations
Like its sister-website, Wikipedia, Wikiquotes is a publicly-created resource-- in this case, of famous and memorable quotations, including quotes from many films.

Greatest Movie Misquotes
A listing of famous popular misquotations of films, including sound clips of the actual quotes, organized by date.
