This is a guide for research in the field of communication studies, and for students enrolled in related courses (such as Journalism). You'll find suggested reference books, subject databases useful for searching for articles from journals and magazines, sources for topical background information, and suggested World Wide Web sites and resources.

EBSCOHost Databases
Off-campus access to these EBSCOHost databases is available to users with a UCC Library card. Please ask at the circulation desk in the library for a complete list of database usernames and passwords.

Academic Search Premier
The world's largest academic multi-disciplinary database, Academic Search Premier provides full text for more than 4,700 scholarly publications, including full text for more than 3,600 peer-reviewed journals. Coverage spans virtually every area of academic study and offers information dating as far back as 1975.

Business Source Premier
As the world's largest full text business database, Business Source Premier provides full text for nearly 7,800 scholarly business journals, including full text for more than 1125 peer-reviewed business publications. Coverage includes virtually all subject areas related to business. This database provides full text (PDF) for more than 350 of the top scholarly journals dating as far back as 1922.

Other Online Databases

LexisNexis Academic-News and Business Collections
Access the full-text of newspapers, magazines, and newswires from both national and local sources, reaching back more than 20 years. Includes film reviews, commentaries and editorials, information from industry and business publications, as well as transcripts from T.V. and radio news programs. Not available off-campus.

The Oregonian (indexed through NewsBank)
Provides complete full-text access to articles and features in The Oregonian from 1988 to the present, excluding advertisements. Available off-campus; ask at the library for the username and password.

A collection of key studies in the field of nonverbal communication, gathered together in one volume. Includes work by researchers in many different fields, such as psychology, anthropology, sociology, and communication.153 N

Persuasive Communication
This volume organizes a general study around important issues in the field of persuasive communication, and lays out key characteristics of persuasive speech. Drawing from a combination of academic theories from both communication and social psychology, each chapter provides brief summaries at the beginning of every section and then presents a survey of the academic frameworks in more detail. 808.042 S

Orality and Literacy
This small volume by Walter J. Ong explores the connections between oral culture, written culture, and the development of communication styles. As the introduction states: "In recent years, certain basic differences have been discovered between the ways of managing knowledge and verbalization in primary oral cultures (cultures with no knowledge at all of writing) and cultures deeply affected by the use of writing." 302.2 O

Communicating at Work
Using a combination of models, quotes, and bulleted lists of common communication styles, this handbook proposes to "improve your speaking, listening, presentation, and correspondence skills to get more done and get what you want at work" in a practical, action-oriented manner. 658.45 A

Can't Get Through: 8 Barriers to Communication
Identifies common communication errors and includes suggestions to reduce or reverse these negative habits. This guide includes multiple examples and suggests alternative conversational strategies to help struggling communicators work through their own barriers. 153.6 H

The Way We Talk Now: Commentaries on Language and Culture
This collection of brief radio transcripts, from linguist Geoffrey Nunberg, covers thirteen years of witty commentary on change and the English language. Examines everything from our adaptation of new words- "cyberspace to e-commerce- to how slang ("cool") changes its meaning in society over time. 400 N

That's NOT What I Meant!
The first book in Deborah Tannen's "communication trilogy," That's NOT What I Meant! explains how communication styles, which differ from person-to-person, can effect the interpretation of our message as much or more as the content. 302 T

Deborah Tannen continues her study of interpersonal communication with this examination of common conversational differences and competencies between women and men. 302 T

Talking From 9 to 5
Tannen's third book on communication differences, this time taking on conversation, gender, and workplace politics. 302 T

Detailed and highly useful subject research guides in fourteen different sub-disciplines provided by the Communication Studies committee of the Association of College and Research Libraries.

Journalism and Mass Communication Abstracts
This index from the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of South Carolina publishes "the abstracts of graduate student research from mass communication programs from more than 50 universities in the United States and Canada." Abstracts from creative projects (feature films, etc) are not included, and there is no full text access available through this database.

Media Literacy Online Project
A directory for online websites related to the study of media literacy, maintained by Gary Ferrington at University of Oregon. Also includes the online, freely accessible archive of the Media Literacy Review, a biannual journal which is no longer actively published.

Annenberg Public Policy Center
"Established in 1994, the Annenberg Public Policy Center of the University of Pennsylvania conducts and disseminates research, hosts lectures and conferences, and convenes roundtable discussions that highlight important questions about the intersection of media, communication, and public policy."

The ACP is a division of the National Scholastic Press Association and "is the largest and oldest national membership organization for college student media in the United States."

News Bias Explored: The art of reading the news
A resource site created by graduate students at University of Michigan to assist students and teachers in exploring news bias in the classroom using evidence-based examples.

New American Media
Founded in 1996, New American Media provides an online source for ethnic and alternative news from across the United States, focusing especially on California.

News Directory
An online web directory of newspapers, local television news broadcasts, and other media outlets organized by geographic region and media type. Commercial site.

Who Owns What
This index, compiled by the Columbia Journalism Review, provides information on what media conglomerates control (for instance, The Oregonian is owned by Advance Publications). Browse by conglomerate, or search by city or publication title.

Federal Trade Commission Report on the Marketing of Violent Entertainment to Children
"The report [completed in 2000] finds that while the entertainment industry has taken steps to identify content that may not be appropriate for children, the companies in those industries still routinely target children under 17 in their marketing of products their own ratings systems deem inappropriate or warrant parental caution due to violent content."
