Full-Time Database Administrator

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
A Database Administrator, or dBA, maintains the function, integrity, and security of the campus databases. The dBA plans and facilitates any upgrades plus ensures the applications with the supporting database(s) and hardware interact as expected. Primarily the dBA supports the Oracle database and functions associated with the Banner Enterprise Resource Planning system.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Essential Functions:
Ensure the overall health and security of the Banner Oracle database
Assess database efficiency and apply basic tuning strategies
Plan Oracle/Banner system upgrades and successfully implement those upgrades
Diagnose Banner issues and implement any sanctioned fixes or repairs
Set up Job Submission and Sleep Wake Processes
Design and implement a database backup plan and test database recovery scenarios
Implement Banner enhancements and add-ons as needed for optimal usability
Assist systems programmers with data location and connection
Develop reports and analysis to support institutional initiatives, goals, planning, and objectives.
Incidental Functions:
Facilitate any web programming projects using database data to/from the web
Assist systems programmers in implementing sound Structured Query Language programming practices
Implement any hardware and software upgrades or changes as needed
Working with programmers and Institutional Research personnel to help develop and manage the campus response to all assigned internal, state, and federal reporting requirements. (OCCURS, FTE Audit, IPEDS, GRS, Perkins III, Grant Writing, etc.)
Create documentation for cross-training in the operation of the database and ERP systems
Other duties as assigned
TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Handle computer equipment up to 50 lbs
Work hours outside of typical workplace hours as needed
Prioritize work assignments
Perform task autonomous and/or as a team member
Requires occasional travel to off-campus college sites.
Must be able to work in a computer room environment with equipment fan noise.
Requires hearing voice conversation, sitting and standing, bending, walking, keyboarding, and reading printed material on a daily basis
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
proficiency with UNIX based server operating systems
a working knowledge of Virtual Machine environments
a good working knowledge of server implementation
the ability to read, write, and optimize PL/SQL code
the ability to optimize PL/SQL code
a working knowledge of the Oracle database environment
have the ability to prioritize assignments as given and be a self starter
knowledge of modern programming languages, structured design, and programming techniques
the ability to think strategically and work at a meticulous level of detail
the ability to maintain familiarity with new developments in related technology fields
the ability to work independently as well as in groups or teams, often as team leader
a working knowledge of desktop computers and desktop computer software
a knowledge of and proficiency to work with application software including word processing, spreadsheet, database management applications, electronic mail, etc.

the ability to speak and write effectively
the ability to work well with faculty, staff, and students with a friendly service oriented attitude
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Associate’s degree from an accredited institution in a computer related field required. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
Experience: At least three (3) years of recent dBA work experienced in a SungardHE Banner customer institution using an Oracle database
Specific Skills: PL/SQL programming, SungardHE Banner proficiency, Oracle database administration, UNIX based OS implementation.
SALARY: $47,034/year DOQ, Full-Time 2011-12, Classified Salary Schedule Grade 47 Step 1.
