Angels Passing by Michael Hoeye

Artist Reception, March 2, 2017, 5-7pm

The Art Gallery at Umpqua Community College is excited to present Angels Passing by Michael Hoeye. The approximately 100 images presented in the gallery project will be on display from Tuesday, February 14, through Thursday, March 16, 2017. A reception with the artist will be held on Thursday, March 2, 2017, 5-7pm.

Strong, happy, dignified, funny, elegant, hopeful, dreamy, mischievous. These are some of the words Hoeye uses to describe the people from his neighborhood. They are seemingly ordinary, but each have a story. Using drawing, photography, and digital printmaking, Hoeye captures the seemingly ordinary people who pass him on the street as they go about their daily routines. As he creates these works, Hoeye asks himself, "Who are they? Where are they going? From where have they come?" Viewers who come to the exhibit may feel as though they’ve seen the individuals featured in the images. The characters are presented without the anchor of a background or specific place. They are completing mundane or everyday tasks. Because of this, viewers are provided an opportunity to observe these individuals and their actions - whether talking on the phone, reading a book, or carrying coffee. Much like the portrait paintings of Alice Neel, Angels Passing is a visual record that highlights the spirit and character of this particular moment in time. Adding context to the images are text pieces written by Joann Mulcahy, an essayist, biographer and ethnographer whose writing focuses on cultural issues.
