Full-Time Classroom Lab Technician

Responsible to: Science Department Chair
General Description: Assists instructors in coordinating and preparing for all science laboratory classes. Responsible for maintenance, organization, and storage of equipment and supplies.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Orders and stocks laboratory materials, equipment and supplies; coordinates purchasing of supplies needed for chemistry, biology, physics, and physics classes; purchases and picks up material from local suppliers; collects material from local environment.
Obtains class calendars from instructors in order to schedule the preparation and set up of laboratory and classroom materials.
Prepares solutions, acid and base reagents, microbiological media, determines acid and base concentrations using titration, inoculates and cultures bacteria, sets up special equipment.
Assists set up of classroom demonstrations.
Collects materials needed for on-line class lab kits; sets up, checks out, and checks in lap kits.
Assists set up of material for Viticulture and Enology labs.
Clean up material, equipment, and classroom after use.
Supervises and trains work-study students in necessary skills and safety training mandated by OSHA.
Safety and Chemical Hygiene Officer for science building to meet OSHA, EPA and State Fire Marshall requirements; keeps up-to-date on current OSHA requirements.
Reviews Chemical Hygiene Plan annually and updates as necessary to meet OSHA requirements.
Maintains Material Safety Data Sheet files.
Cleans up spills of hazardous materials including mercury, acids, base, solvents, broken glass, and biohazards.
Maintains equipment in operating conditions; checks working of safety equipment (safety showers, eyewash fountains, fume hoods) every term as required by OSHA; arranges for annual servicing and calibration of selected equipment.
Maintains records and files as required including current chemical inventory and equipment in computerized database.
Maintains life sciences laboratory plant collection year around.
Monitors make-u labs for all science classes.
Proctors exams for on-line class, for make-up exams, and when multiple testing sites are required due to large class sizes.
Proctors and collects classroom evaluations for both full-time and part-time instructors.
May provide other assistance to instructors in the laboratory or classroom.
Answers telephone and takes messages.
May drive for science field trips.
Performs other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor.
TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Bending, color identification, crouching, gripping with hands and fingers, hearing voice conversation, kneeling, lifting/carrying 1-14 pounds, reaching ,sitting, standing, walking, exposure to chemicals, noxious odors, and outside temperature extremes, wearing rubber or plastic gloves, wearing safety glasses, work in water, working with solvent, acids, bases, corrosives, biohazards, grease, oils, inks occurs in this job daily.
Climbing ladders, lifting/carrying 15-34 pounds, pulling pushing, standing long periods, stooping, twisting body, exposure to dust, pollen, and fumes, noisy work area, work in crowded areas occurs regularly but not daily.
Lifting/carrying 35-60 pounds, operating passenger vehicles, walking rough terrains, exposure to body fluids, dampness, exposure to bee stings, exposure to poison oak and sun rarely occurs but will occur within the work year.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Has strong knowledge of Biological and Physical Sciences with math skills essential for preparation of solutions and for titrations.
Understands how the laboratory curriculum relates to instructional goals.
Operates equipment used in the science laboratory.
Works with hazardous material, including chemicals and biohazards, in a safe and prudent manner and understands DEQ, OSHA, and EPA regulations as well as standard procedures.
Exhibits organizational skills essential to coordinate diverse and conflicting classroom schedules so each laboratory class may function successfully.
Uses computerized work processing, spreadsheets, and databases efficiently.
Knowledge of on-line learning environments.
Works effectively under pressure with faculty and students.
Ability to work independently, self-motivated.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree in a science area required. Equivalent combination of education and experience considered.
ODL required.
Laboratory experience preferred.
SALARY: $26,264 Full-Time, 2011-12 Classified Salary Schedule, Grade 23 Step 1.
