Part-Time Adult Basic Skills Development GED Instructor

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Teach Adult Basic Education, Pre-GED and GED classes using instructional methods geared toward the adult learner. Plan lessons and curriculum based on the learning needs of culturally diverse and multi-skill level students which prepare students to pass the GED tests and/or enhance basic education skills.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Essential Functions:
Responsible for teaching the GED test areas (literature, writing, social studies, science and math) or adult basic education skills areas (writing, math)
Plan and prepares relevant and practical class lessons with the focus on the core GED test areas
Implement a variety of instructional delivery methods, that include group or individualized instruction that help students make learning gains
Administer benchmark tests to determine individual progress
Complete and maintain appropriate student registration, attendance, and assessment records, and ensure timely submission of reports
Administer Title II Assessments and learn CASAS Accountability system
Obtain accommodations for students with learning disabilities through UCC staff
Help students work out solutions to barriers to GED testing & transitioning to college
Maintain a cooperative, professional attitude with fellow staff members and students
Responsible for effective classroom management that enhances student learning
Perform other duties as assigned by the director.
Incidental Functions:
Participate in curriculum development
Attend in-service, staff meetings and state training as related to the instruction of ABSD
Maintain clean and professional classroom environment
Typical Physical Demands and Work Environment:
Frequent standing
Bending and stooping frequently. Lifting/carrying 0-14 pounds occasionally. Reaching, sitting standing and walking occurs in the job daily.
Twisting body occurs regularly. Kneeling occurs rarely.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of adult learner and alternative educational methods and have the ability to apply these methods for adult, at-risk teens and multi-cultural students
Ability to teach students of diverse abilities and backgrounds and overcome barriers to success in a multi-level class
Ability to build a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of students.
Must be computer literate
Ability to use a variety of audio-visual equipment
Must be able to communicate effectively both orally and through correct written grammar and usage.
Must have good classroom management skills
Must have strong desire to work with people from a broad range of backgrounds
Must be able to pass Criminal History Check
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Education or related field, required
One year of documented, successful teaching experience, required
Adult Basic Education teaching experience, preferred
SALARY: $22.28/hr DOQ, Part-time 2011-12 Faculty Salary Schedule
