Part-Time Academic Advisor

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Academic Advisor provides academic advisement for prospective, current, and former students within a specified certificate or degree program. Assesses academic level, attends to student academic inquiries, assists in the resolution of individual academic needs, and advises on academic program changes. Advises and assists students in the development of academic term-by-term planners and class schedules. Develops and maintains appropriate files and records.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

  • Provide effective academic program advising; assists students with appropriate course selection and concentrations in terms of students' stated academic preferences.
  • Maintain current knowledge of UCC programs and academic requirements
  • Develops and maintains a network of collaborative relationships with academic programs, departments, institutions and organizations, as well as colleagues with respect to academic and career advisement and student retention programs, initiatives, and issues.
  • Plans, develops, and conducts educational seminars and/or workshops for students, faculty and staff on strategies, policies, procedures, and issues pertaining to student academic advisement and retention efforts.
  • Initiates and maintains individual student term-by-term planners electronically, updating and evaluating planners as needed to ensure meeting program graduation requirements.
  • Reviews student mid-term and grade reports each term to assist potential probation and/or suspended students based on academic regulations of college; notifies students and informs them of campus and community resources.
  • Prepares form letters, individual letters, e-mails and information packets in support of group and/or individual retention efforts; attends and participates in individual and group orientation and other information dissemination sessions.
  • Assists administrators, faculty, athletic coaches, and/or other college personnel with academic advisement information and process.
  • Performs administrative support activities such as scheduling meetings and interviews, securing requested information, verifying and maintaining computerized data files, and preparing summary reports.
  • Willingness to work some night and weekend activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Strong listening, oral, written and presentation communication skills
  • Ability to research and stay current with other college/university academic requirements in order to provide accurate advising assistance to transfer students
  • Experience providing presentations and speaking in front of groups
  • Demonstrated ability to work with and be sensitive to people of diverse populations
  • Available to assist prospective and enrolled students
  • Ability to work as a team member and develop cooperative working relationships
  • Demonstrated flexibility to adjust to change and coordinate multiple projects
  • Proficient knowledge of micro computer operations; Internet Explorer, electronic mail,
  • MicroSoft Office® (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint) and student information systems
  • Ability to work independently to organize, set priorities, meet deadlines and follow through on details to completion

    QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Associate degree required; Bachelor's degree preferred;
  • Academic advising or mentoring experience desired;
  • Strong customer service experience;
  • Computer skills, Internet knowledgeable, Web page development, Database, Word-processing and student management software experience (SCT Banner);
  • Demonstrated self-starter with high degree of motivation, energy, and flexibility;
  • Demonstrated sound organizational and problem-solving abilities;
  • Demonstrated sensitivity and experience working with individuals from diverse social, economic, ethnic, academic, and cultural backgrounds;
  • Proven written and oral communication skills

    SALARY: $14.29/hour, Part-time 2011-12 Classified Salary Schedule. Grade 28 step 1
