Engineering Tech: Surveying

Program Descriptions

Civil Engineering Technology Program

The field of civil engineering deals with planning; design; construction; and maintenance of private and public projects. These projects include highways, bridges, dams, subdivisions, water supply and waste systems. Civil Engineering Technology graduates work with or in support of professional engineers.

The Civil Engineering Technology program promotes education in the relevant theory and practice common to all branches of civil engineering. Every effort is made to relate theory to practical situations. To achieve this goal, the faculty is selected from broad and diverse backgrounds and work experience.

The civil engineering program is also designed to meet job requirements in the engineering field. Practical training in such areas as surveying, road construction, and structural design is provided. Training is broad enough to enable use of the program as a base for further study.

Students interested in Civil Engineering Technology should direct their high school studies toward mathematics and science. Completing two years of algebra, one year of geometry and one year of physics would be beneficial for students entering the Civil Engineering Technology program.

The Associate of Applied Science degree is awarded once all required courses, electives and general education requirements are successfully completed. Students may pursue two degree options: an associate degree in Civil Engineering Technology followed by employment; or an associate degree which will transfer to Oregon Institute of Technology for completion of a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering.

Students must be prepared to begin calculus (Math 251) to enter the transfer program. Students who are not prepared to begin calculus or are undecided about the options should contact an engineering advisor for assistance.

Transfer Engineering Technology Programs

Students may earn an Associate of Science degree with an emphasis in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or Surveying. Upon completion of the AS degree, students may then transfer to Oregon Institute of Technology to complete a Bachelor's of Science degree in Engineering Technology. See an engineering advisor for more details.

Transfer Engineering Programs

Majors in engineering are offered at Oregon State University, Portland State University and other universities. The freshman and sophomore years at most universities are designated pre-engineering, with the junior and senior years designated professional engineering. Students can complete a two-year pre-Engineering program at UCC then transfer to the university of their choice. Admission is competitive and a required core of courses must be completed to establish eligibility for admission. Eligibility to apply does not assure admission.
