Details

I hold PhD and MS degrees in sociology from the University of Oregon and a BA in sociology from Eastern Washington University. Though my credentials warrant the use of the honorific "Dr. Smith," I prefer to be called Emery.

I have taught at UO, the University of Montana at Missoula, Big Bend Community College in Washington, and have been here at UCC since 2007. Before attending college in my thirties I worked as a heavy equipment operator and mechanic, a garbage man, a carpenter, and other jobs too numerous to mention. Previous to teaching at Big Bend I was a senior partner at Northwest Survey & Data Services, and have served as a research director at the Oregon Survey Research Laboratory on the UO campus and as a research associate at the Oregon Social Learning Center. I have extensive research experience, which I currently use to do research on student persistance and success, but I have returned to academia because I love to teach.

I teach many courses in sociology as well as statistics, human development, and anthropology. I currently teach Introduction to Sociology; Life-Span Development; Contemporary American Family; Race, Class, and Ethnicity; and this course: Social Problems. In the near future I plan to take a few graduate philosophy courses so that I can teach introductory philosophy.

I grew up in Montana and have lived in Wyoming, California and Washington. I am a veteran of the US Navy, having served as aircrew in a patrol squadron during the Viet Nam War. I have two children, a son in Oakland CA and a daughter in her second year of medical residency in Renton WA. I am married and have two step daughters, both living in Oregon, as well as two grandsons, who are currently the center of my universe. I play guitar and read when I have time. And I play disc golf, lots of disc golf.
