Apprenticeships
Apprenticeship Programs Available at UCC
All apprenticeship programs at UCC are regulated by the State of Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries, Apprenticeship Training Division (BOLI-ATD). Opportunities statewide and more information about apprenticeship can be obtained at the BOLI-ATD website www.oregon.gov/boli/atd/.
Candidate selection varies by occupation. Normally, there are two ways to enter a program:
- Apply when the trade opens for application or
- Enter the program while employed by a company
State and federal laws determine entry requirements. General minimum requirements for entrance are:
- 18 years of age
- High school graduation preferred; GED accepted
- One year of high school math with a passing grade of C or better
- Acceptance after interview by the local Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee (JATC)
The apprenticeship program is two-fold. Apprentices gain experience while working in a chosen field and also attend classes. Local JATCs of both labor and management work with the college to implement the apprenticeship programs.
Upon being selected as an apprentice, a contractual agreement is secured with the JATC, the employer, and BOLI-ATD. The apprentice, as an employee, earns wages while receiving on-the-job-training (OJT) and related training in class. Every six months progress is reviewed and evaluated.
Related training at UCC is available for the trades of:
- Inside Electrician
- Mfg. Plant Electrician
- Limited Maintenance Electrician
- Industrial Maintenance Millwright
- Industrial Machinist
- Industrial Pipe-fitter
An apprentice may also earn a Certificate of Completion and an Associate of Applied Science degree by successfully completing the required credit hours with a grade of “C” or better in all courses. This is a four-year program. Apprentices complete 8000 hours of OJT and 576 hours of related classroom training.
Minimum requirements for application:
- At least 18 years old
- High school diploma (2.0 GPA) or GED
- One year high school algebra or equivalent post high school
Applications are taken bi-annually and are scored based upon the documentation submitted including transcripts, letters from previous employers, DD214, etc., in addition to an interview. Applicants are then ranked according to their total score and placed on a list of eligible applicants. This process establishes a pool of eligibles; it does not fulfill immediate job openings.
SELECTION PROCEDURES
Once an applicant has been hired by an approved training agent, he/she is indentured into the apprenticeship program and then the training begins.
After completion of this program apprentices are referred to the State of Oregon Building Codes Division for exam. Successful completion of this exam results in a General Journeyman Electrician License.
Apprentice electricians may also earn a Certificate of Completion and an Associate of Applied Science degree by successfully completing the required credit hours with a grade of “C” or better in all courses.
