History (Transfer)
Associate in Arts Degree Program (Transfer)
History is the study of the rise and evolution of societies and civilizations. The term "history" comes from the Greek word for inquiry and is related to the English word, story. A history degree can lead to jobs in the fields of education, museum work, historical preservation efforts, archival research, and scholarly publications. Many history majors also pursue post graduate careers in law, government, business, and in other related social sciences fields. The study of history greatly broadens one's perspective on and of understanding of human life within society and over time. Additionally, the analytical skills and communication abilities gained in the pursuit of a history degree are greatly valued in the above-mentioned career paths.
The history major is offered at all of the seven public colleges and universities in Oregon, and at most private colleges in the state. All major schools across the country also offer BA and advance degree programs in History.
Following the standard transfer program requirements will gain entry for qualified students into the Oregon university system as well as universities in other states and countries. Appropriate early courses for history majors are:
- Science - Geology or Biology
- Math - 105 or 111
- Social Sciences - (besides History courses) Political Science, Sociology, Anthropology, Economics, and Psychology
- Foreign language: Two years of a foreign language is required for a B.A. degree in most universities, and is a good idea in general for broadening our perspective and strengthening one's job entry chances in the field.
