Anthropology is the study of humankind, through all time and space. Anthropology is divided into four major fields: archaeology, physical anthropology which includes paleoanthropology, cultural anthropology and linguistic anthropology.

What can you do with it? According to the American Anthropological Association

Many anthropologists with master's degrees or bachelor's degrees work for contract archaeology firms at archaeological sites, in physical anthropology laboratories, and in museums in a wide range of areas. The increasing demand for anthropologists is stimulated by a growing need for analysts and researchers with sharp thinking skills who can manage, evaluate and interpret the large volume of data on human behavior. These jobs might include program director, consultant, planner, market analyst, housing administrator, cross-cultural trainer, social worker, survey researcher, or coordinator of refugee services. Most jobs filled by anthropologists don't mention the word anthropologist in the job announcement; such positions are broadly defined to attract researchers, evaluators and project managers.

In Oregon, students can major in anthropology at UO, OSU and PS. EOU and SOU offer combined anthropology/sociology majors. There are many, many other schools around the country that offer anthropology as a major. If a student should be interested in relocating to a big city, the museum resources are draws for budding anthropologists (Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. for instance, or the New York Museum of Natural History).

Following the standard transfer program will get one accepted into most of the transfer schools. Appropriate early courses for anthropology majors are:

• Science: Geology or Biology
• Math: 105 or 111
• Social Sciences: Sociology, Anthropology, Economics, History. Individual classes (non-sequences) that would be helpful are Race, Class and Ethnicity and Contemporary American Family.
• Foreign Language: Two years of a foreign language is required for a B.A. degree almost anywhere (and is a good idea in general!)
