UCC JOBS provides the following services to anyone who is receiving any type of public assistance:
Adult Basic Education
The purpose of the Umpqua Community College JOBS Program is to improve basic workplace skills which can include reading, writing, mathematics, problem solving, and study skills; as well as an opportunity to achieve a GED or high school diploma.
Career Advancement
For those individuals who have previously been on public assistance but are presently employed and want to achieve a higher income level, opportunities are available for enhancing their skills through workshops, classes, and individual career counseling.
Computer Classes
All program participants may receive instruction in basic computer classes. UCC JOBS has a modern computer lab that accommodates 17 students. Each computer is equipped with a number of up-to-date programs, including Microsoft Word, Word Perfect, Excel, and more, as well as access to the Internet.
Drug and Alcohol Counseling
As substance abuse is often a major cause of joblessness, an on-site counselor from ADAPT is available to all participants in our program. In addition to providing personal counseling, the counselor does screenings and sometimes teaches classes. These services are available not only to individuals who are dealing with their own addictions, but to those whose lives are being impacted by a family member who is abusing alcohol or drugs.
Job Readiness
Workshops and individual counseling are provided by our Life Skills Specialist. Workshops give participants the tools to deal more effectively with personal and interpersonal issues. Subjects covered include stress management, parenting, assertiveness, problem-solving, and handling anger.
Job Search
Participants receive support and guidance from the Oregon State Employment Department, Umpqua Training and Employment, and UCC JOBS, in completing job applications, creating and updating resumes, and connecting with prospective employers.
"Jobs Plus"
Some participants may qualify for this program, which offers actual employment in exchange for the same remuneration as their cash grant affords.
Work Experience
An opportunity to acquire unpaid work experience in a career area that fits their interests and abilities, while retaining any DHS benefits, is available to many participants. Although work experience assignments seldom lead to employment at that particular worksite, they afford the individual with valuable information to add to their resume, as well as the actual experience. Frequently, people who have engaged in this work experience program go on to other "paying" jobs.
