Southern Oregon Wine Institute at UCC Holds Marketing Summit

From Cellar to Seller: Connecting You to Your Marketplace

Roseburg— One of the hardest parts of owning your own company is wearing all the many hats that are required. One moment you’re the webmaster, the next a sales rep, and the next, the PR contact.

The small but rapidly growing wine industry is no exception to that here in Oregon. Most Oregon wineries are small family owned and operated business, with the same issues as any other small business.

Umpqua Community College’s Southern Oregon Wine Institute has brought together a group of experts in marketing, research, public relations, tourism and design to assist the wine industry develop the skills and tools they need for success. The first annual From Cellar to Seller will take place Sunday evening, March 2 and all day Monday, March 3, 2008, at the College.

“From Cellar to Seller will help develop the skills our industry needs to continue to grow at the fast pace we are seeing today,” said Umpqua Valley Winegrowers Association President Syndi Beavers of Henry Estate Winery, near Roseburg.

Keynote speaker, syndicated wine writer Dan Berger, will address the attendees on Sunday evening at dinner. Berger is an internationally known wine judge and publishes “Berger’s Vintage Experiences,” a subscription only weekly wine newsletter. He has visited the Umpqua Valley previously to be a judge at the Greatest of the Grape, the oldest food and wine celebration in Oregon. As it happens, Cellar to Seller is just two weeks before this year’s Greatest of the Grape on March 15.

Breakout sessions at Cellar to Seller will include topics such as public relations, website development, figuring out who your customers are, and writing tasting notes.

“We’re hoping that there is something for everyone to take home and be able to implant and improve their businesses,” said Pete Bober, Director of Workforce Development at UCC, whom is co-directing the event in conjunction with Janelle Wilde, Executive Secretary of the Umpqua Valley Winegrowers Association.
