“Moodle” system shut down
UCC maintains IT system security after
student learning system “compromised”

Winchester—Umpqua Community College became aware early Tuesday (February 12) that a “Learning Management System” called Moodle used by a small number of our students had been compromised. This is an isolated event, and we have taken steps to make sure all information is secure.
The College information technology (IT) department knows how the system was compromised and has taken steps to address it. As one of the steps the College is taking, Moodle has been shut down.
Any student or staff member whose records may have been compromised has been notified directly.
The College has taken steps to assure that all other computer systems that contain student or staff information are secure.
Students and staff members who have questions should contact the College IT department at 440.7808.
On the Moodle system, students received assignments, performed and turned in course work and communicated with their instructors. Steps have been taken to enable students who had been using that system to complete their course work in a timely fashion on another system – though some students may face inconveniences.
There is no evidence that any personal records have been impacted. However, the State of Oregon’s Department of Consumer and Business Services recommends that any resident go to the department’s website (http://www.cbs.state.or.us/dfcs/id_theft.html) for information about credit files and how to protect themselves from identity theft under Oregon law.
