Million$ available in student financial aid; learn how to access it at UCC, January 26

Roseburg— A great deal of student financial aid is available for a great many things for those interested in a college education. Almost all financial aid, regardless of sources, requires one form to begin to access it: the FAFSA, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.

On Saturday, January 26, from 9 am to 2 pm, at the Umpqua Community College library, you will find answers to your questions and help filling out the FAFSA. That help is free! And, bring your parents.

“This is the most important document for financial aid,” said Laurie Spangenberg, UCC director of financial aid. “It opens the door to a great many scholarship opportunities.”

Umpqua Community College, alone, has disbursed more than $3 million to students attending the College this year. And, applications at UCC are up over this time last year.

But, financial aid is available for many reasons: some employers provide scholarships for their workers or their children; other scholarships are for students interested in a broadcasting career; some are for the sciences; others are for the arts. If you’re interested in it as a course of study or a career, there’s very likely a financial aid program to help you along.

What almost all have in common is that they require a filled-out and returned FAFSA. If you’re a student of any age, planning to go anywhere to college, inside Oregon or outside, this same document likely is required for financial aid. It’s required for the federal Pell grant, the largest scholarship program in the world, or scholarships offered by the Oregon Student Assistance Commission.

What do you need to bring? Evidence of your prior-year family income. The FAFSA will need your name, address and Social Security number. Dependent children will use their parent’s information, so bring your mother or father.

In the course of 20 to 30 minutes, including an overview of the application process, with professional technical help right there in the UCC library on January 26, students will be able to complete the FAFSA and be ready to apply for virtually all of the financial aid they want or need.
