Roseburg— Tuesday evening, November 13, Umpqua Community College will cut the ribbon to open its V. Dean Swanson Amphitheatre on the western end of its campus, balancing the fountain to the east. The invitation-only occasion, from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm, will honor the many, many community members and volunteers who had a hand in its construction.

“What makes this project so special for me,” said UCC President Blaine Nisson, “is the large number of community members who worked on it, from its design, to its construction, to raising the money to build it. It is a community project in the best sense of the word, and we envision that the community will find many purposes for it.”

V. Dean Swanson, for whom the amphitheatre is named, was born in Eugene in 1925 and was successful with the Superior Lumber Company in Glendale, Douglas County, which he started in 1951 with his brothers. Swanson died in 2005. He had a strong belief in the importance of higher education and two of his four children attended UCC.

Key to the success of the amphitheatre was the Roseburg morning Rotary Club. The project to build the amphitheatre was launched in 2006, the 100th anniversary of Rotary International and the 40th anniversary of the founding of UCC.

But, beyond that, is the large number of volunteers who, for nearly a year, almost daily, worked to raise the structure, lay the stone and smooth the walk around it.

All will be recognized and treated to a program that features offerings from UCC’s renowned Umpqua Singers and its culinary arts kitchen.
