Roseburg— Umpqua Community College‘s new listening class—designed to increase academic, personal and career success—will be offered for the first time this winter through Umpqua Community College’s Communication Studies Program. This listening class (SP105) will focus on different types of listening behaviors and practical ways to improve listening skills. The class will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, January 8 through March 20, from 1:00 p.m. - 2:15 p.m. This is a 3 credit course. To register, call 440-7744 and ask for course number 32155.

Though listening is considered an elective course at Umpqua Community College, it is a required course in the Communication Studies Program at Marylhurst University (UCC and Marylhurst University have an articulation agreement between their Communication Studies Programs).

According to listening expert and author, Judi Brownell, 60 percent of business errors are a result of poor listening skills. A study by the National Communication Association also revealed that adults typically listen at about a 25 percent efficiency rate. The good news is that listening skills can be improved.
