Roseburg— The Art Gallery at Umpqua Community College presents The Consensus, a kinetic sculpture by Portland artist, Dan Gilsdorf. The Consensus will be on display from November 5 to December 6, 2007. The Art Gallery at Umpqua Community College is located in the Whipple Fine and Performing Arts Building on the Umpqua Community College campus, 1140 College Rd, Roseburg, Oregon. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 am – 4:00 pm and by appointment.

Gilsdorf’s work, which has been exhibited across the United States and in Japan, explores narration through simple mechanisms. His sculptures engage the viewer with motion and change throughout the course of an exhibit. As Gilsdorf explains, his sculptures “…examine the process of how the present becomes the past. They are an exploration of how deeds and events are transformed into memory and catalogued into historical record.”

The Consensus is a newly-created installation consisting of a grid of 25 hats. Each hat is atop a stand, whose base is made from a log. The hats are activated to nod and shake as if they have heads in them. The hats are computer controlled such that they engage in a minimal conversation of silent yes’s and no’s, reaching periodic agreements within the group either in the negative or the positive.
