This is an online pathfinder to help you get started with your research in the areas of Psychology and the related social sciences. You'll find suggested reference books, subject databases useful for searching for articles from journals and magazines, sources for topical background information, and suggested World Wide Web sites and resources.

Online Databases

EBSCOHost Databases
Off-campus access to these EBSCOHost databases is available to users with a UCC Library card. Please ask at the circulation desk in the library for a complete list of database usernames and passwords.

Academic Search Premier
Multi-disciplinary database of full text articles and abstracts including magazines and peer-reviewed journals in the field of psychology.

Psychology & Behavioral Sciences Collection
Provides over 550 full text publications, covering "topics such as emotional and behavioral characteristics, psychiatry & psychology, mental processes, anthropology, and observational and experimental methods." (Scroll down to find this collection.)

Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition

Medical journal database featuring full text articles and abstracts focusing on many medical disciplines including psychology and other related fields.

MedLine

The EBSCO version of the National Library of Medicine’s MEDLINE abstract database. Medline indexes articles in the field of medicine and includes abstracts of journal articles of in the field of psychology and may have links to some full text articles that are indexed in regular EBSCO databases.

Other Databases

Access Science
An encyclopedic database dealing with science and technology that includes a section on psychiatry and psychology. Access Science contains encyclopedic articles and research updates as well as study guides, essay topics, biographies and related websites for the field of psychology.

LexisNexis Medical
In the LexisNexis Academic database, click on the "MEDICAL" option. In this section, you can access medical news and journal articles from medical and health sources. You can also search for article abstracts via their version of the MEDLINE abstract database, which has an option to search for abstracts only in psychology and psychoanalysis journals.

Dictionary of Psychology
Comprehensive dictionary covering terms relating to the study of psychology and people important to the field. Also includes common abbreviations, prefixes and suffixes used in terminology, and common statistical formulas used in research. REF 150.3 C

Psychiatric Dictionary
Dictionary of psychiatric terms updated with new terms and criteria from DSM-IV and the World Health Organization. Also includes cross-references. REF 616.89 C

Handbook of Psychology
A series of handbooks to educate and inform about the present state of psychological knowledge and about anticipated advances in behavioral science research and practice. These handbooks cover a wide range of topics dealing with the field of psychology. REF 150.3 H

Magill’s Encyclopedia of Social Science: Psychology
Encyclopedia covering the field of psychology with key concepts listing and recommended sources for further study for each entry. REF 150.3 M

Encyclopedia of Psychology
Encyclopedia specializing in the field of psychology with bibliography included for each entry. REF 150.3 E

Child Development
This single-volume encyclopedia covers everything from adoption to video games. Articles are written in accessable language without heavy use of specialized psychological vocabulary. Includes four types of articles: Overviews (3,000 word summaries of major themes), Introductions (1,500 word articles), Definitions (150 word brief descriptions), and Biographies (400 word profiles). Every article includes a bibliography. REF 155.4 C

Psychologists & Their Theories for Students
A two-volume set that aims to provide an introduction to "20 most frequently studied or most pertinent" psychologists, their theories, and their historical contexts. Major entries also may contain smaller biographies of psychologists who studied related areas. REF 150.9 P

Corsini Encyclopedia of Psychology and Behavioral Science
A revised psychology encyclopedia with fairly concise entries that also include a list of references and related terms. REF 150.321

Psychoanalytic Terms & Concepts
A reference work put out by The American Psychoanalytic Association that has brief encyclopedic entries with references and related terms listed. REF 616.89 P

DSM-IV-TR: Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders
Handbook for the classification and diagnosis of mental disorders put out by the American Psychiatric Association. REF 616.89 D

Encyclopedia of Mental Health
Thorough analysis of topics that relate to mental health issues including a bibliography for each entry. REF 616.891 E

The Gale Encyclopedia of Mental Disorders
Comprehensive reference work designed to inform and educate readers about a wide variety of mental disorders, diagnostic techniques and tests, therapies, and psychiatric medications. REF 616.89 G

American Psychological Association
Scientific and professional organization that represents psychology in America and it is the largest association of psychologists worldwide.

American Psychological Society
Organization dedicated to the scientific interests of psychology.

Psych Web
Source of psychology related information for students and teachers of psychology.

Google Scholar
Use the familiar Google search tool to locate peer-reviewed academic research and books online. Includes citation trail information, where available. (Most links will provide free access to citation information and abstracts without full-text, but once an article is located you may search EBSCOHost for the text or request an interlibrary loan-- see your UCC librarians for more details!)

Google Directory: Psychology
A very comprehensive directory of psychology resources available on the World Wide Web, broken down into subtopics, and links to related subjects.

Social Psychology Network
Largest social psychology database on the Internet with more than 5,000 links related to psychology.

Internet Public Library- Psychology Associations on the Net
Listing of psychology associations and their websites compiled by the IPL project at the University of Michigan.

Psych Central
A comprehensive list of online resources including useful websites, newsgroups, and articles in the fields of mental health, psychology, social work, and psychiatry.

Online Encyclopedia of Psychology
An encyclopedia and directory of psychology resources developed by the Department of Psychology at Jacksonville State University.

Career Information in Psychology
Very thorough collection of information resources for a career in psychology including job listings, student aid and internships, career tips, resume resources and graduate school information.

PsychExperiments
PsychExperiments is an "on-line cognitive and social psychology laboratory site" designed to give undergraduate psychology students and departments online access to experiments first-hand. From the University of Mississippi and the National Science Foundation.

Classics in the History of Psychology
This resource site gathers together the full-text of significant psychology works which have come into the public domain (generally works published before 1932). Links to the full text of over 25 books and over 400 other related works (including articles). Produced by Christopher Green, Associate Professor of Psychology, York University (Toronto).

Stanford Prison Experiment
"The Stanford Prison Experiment web site ... features an extensive slide show and information about this classic psychology experiment, including parallels with the abuse of prisoners at Abu Ghraib. What happens when you put good people in an evil place? Does humanity win over evil, or does evil triumph? These are some of the questions [which were] posed in this dramatic simulation of prison life conducted in the summer of 1971 at Stanford University."

The Psychology of Cyberspace
An online text authored by John Suler at Rider University, discussing "the psychological aspects of environments created by computers and online networks." New material has been added on to the original 1996 version.

Facts About Sexual Orientation
An overview of social science theory and research on sexual orientation, from Gregory Herek, Professor of Psychology, University of California, Davis.

Food Psychology
Why do those fast food ads look so good? Does the way a package or bottle is shaped effect how badly we want the food inside? Which colors make us "hungier?" Answers to all of these questions and more at this University of Illinois site.

Bad Human Factors Designs
"A scrapbook of illustrated examples of things that are hard to use because they do not follow human factors principles, by Michael J. Darnell [usability engineer]." Includes VCRs!

Medline/Pubmed
PubMed, a service of the National Library of Medicine, includes over 14 million citations for biomedical articles back to the 1950's. These citations are from MEDLINE and additional life science journals. Citations for articles relating to psychology and related subjects are included in the Medline/Pubmed database.

MedlinePlus
A user-friendly website with appropriate and authoritative health information put out by the National Library of Medicine for health professionals and consumers.
