PHILOSOPHY AND WORLD RELIGIONS RESOURCES

This is a guide for research in the fields of philosophy and world religions, and for students enrolled in courses related to these subjects. You'll find suggested reference books, subject databases useful for searching for articles from journals and magazines, sources for topical background information, and suggested World Wide Web sites and resources.

Online Databases

EBSCOHost Academic Search Premier

Multi-disciplinary database of full text articles and abstracts from magazines and peer-reviewed journals including those in the field of religion, philosophy and other related disciplines. Off-campus access to this database is available to users with a UCC Library card. Please ask at the circulation desk in the library or contact a librarian for a complete list of database usernames and passwords.

Encyclopedia of Religion
16 volume encyclopedia covering all aspects of world religions. Each entry is signed and includes a bibliography for further research and the last volume of the set is a comprehensive index of the encyclopedia. R 200.321 E

Religions of the World
A comprehensive encyclopedia of beliefs and practices. Includes entries for information on religions in different countries and includes additional sources and contact information. REF 200.321 R

The New Encyclopedia of Islam
One volume encyclopedia with concise entries on things relating to Islam. Includes maps, a chronology of the Islamic religion, and a recommended bibliography for further study. REF 297 G

The Oxford Dictionary of the Jewish Religion
Comprehensive dictionary of the Jewish religion with almost 2,400 entries and bibliographies included for further research. REF 296 O

Oxford Companion to the Bible
A one volume reference with concise entries to the people, places, events, books, institutions, religious beliefs, and secular influences of the Bible. REF 220.3 O

Atlas of the Bible
Geographical look at the Bible that includes maps, gazetteer, and index. 220.93 R

Encyclopedia of American Religions
This comprehensive reference work on American religions includes introductory and historical essays on the different religions organized by general grouping. Most of this work is a directory of the thousands of different religions giving concise background information and history as well as contact information. REF 280 M

Banned Books- Literature Suppressed on Religious Grounds
A reference for 100 titles which "represent a sampling of the thousands that have been targets of religious censorship over the centuries." Each title's author, date of original publication, literary form, and a brief summary of the book's content and controversy is provided. REF 098.1 B v. 3

A dictionary with short, encyclopedia-like entries on the major philosophers and religious figures, as well as terms in the field. Entries include extensive cross-references to related topics. R 103 R

The Cambridge Dictionary of Philosophy
Paragraph to page-long entries on major philosophical topics, encompassing many non-European areas. REF 103 C

Encyclopedia of Philosophy
An 8-volume encyclopedia of major philosophers and schools of thought in the field, as well as regions connected to the development of key philosophical concepts. R 103 E

Websites- Religion

The Pluralism Project
A directory from Harvard University, "[t]he Pluralism Project maintains an extensive directory of religious centers in the United States. At present, this directory exists in a searchable database, with listings of over 4500 centers across the United States. It does not include information on Christian or Jewish centers, as these can be readily found in the local phonebook; however, it does include listings for Buddhist, Hindu, Jain, Taoist, and Zoroastrian Temples and Centers, as well as Baha'i and Pagan Centers, Islamic Centers and Masajid, and Sikh Gurdwaras."

Librarians' Internet Index: Religion
Extensive web directory of religion and philosophy sites, subdivided by faith and topic, all reviewed by a librarian for reliability and usefulness.

Internet Sacred Text Archive-World Religions

Access to online full-text versions of sacred texts covering just about all the different religions of the world.

Complete Versions of The Bible: University of Chicago ARTFL Project

Full-text early versions of the Bible in different languages (King James English, Latin Vulgate, Luther German and Louis Segond French). These online versions also have a search option

Christian Classics Ethereal Library

Online collection of writings on Christian theology that is consistently updated and growing. Includes encyclopedias, dictionaries and different versions of The Bible.

Guide to Christian Literature on the Internet

Extensive collection of online Christian literature resources including full-text Bibles in different languages, Bible study aids, books and literature collections. Created and updated by the Institute for Christian Leadership.

The Catholic Encyclopedia

Full and authoritative information on the entire cycle of Catholic interests, action and doctrine, including declarations on current issues such as abortion and sexuality.

The Book of Mormon

Full-text and searchable version of the Book of Mormon from Project Gutenberg.

Judaism and Jewish Resources

Huge listing of online resources relating to Judaism broken down into different sections and consistently updated by Andrew Tannenbaum of the Shamash Organization.

Jewish Web Directory

Leading directory and search engine for Jewish content related websites. Lists over 15,000 websites categorized into over 250 related subject categories.

Islam World

Extensive information and resources dealing with Islam. Full-text versions of the Quran in different languages, analysis of passages and resources for believers and those who are studying religion.

BuddhaNet

Buddhist Studies WWW Virtual Library

This site keeps track of leading information facilities in the fields of Buddhism and Buddhist studies. Covers the different branches of Buddhism and includes different searchable options for information.

Resources for the Study of Buddhism
A guide for students studying Buddhism, with a short introductory reading list; links to general sites, Sutras, and texts; and more. Created by Dr. Ron Epstein, San Francisco State University (retired).

Baha'i World
A general resource site for the Baha'i faith, including an overview, basic writings, teachings of Baha'u'llah, and other links.

International Humanist and Ethical Union
"IHEU is the world union of Humanist, rationalist, secular, laïque, ethical culture, atheist and freethought organizations." Includes links to local organization and websites promoting atheism.

Secular Web
Atheism, Agnosticism, Naturalism, Skepticism, and Secularism resource website, maintained by "the Internet Infidels, an organization of unpaid volunteers dedicated to the growth and maintenance of the most comprehensive freethought website on the Internet."

A news website and companion to the weekly program on PBS. Requires Flash.

The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy
A general online philosophy reference source. All entries are peer-reviewed before they are posted.

The Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy
A peer-reviewed resource created through the University of Tennessee at Marin, providing "detailed, scholarly information on key topics and philosophers in all areas of philosophy. The IEP is free of charge and available to all internet users world wide."

Librarians' Internet Index: Ethics
A web directory maintained by librarians who evaluate the content for quality, durability, and usefulness.

Codes of Ethics Online
The Center for the Study of Ethics in the Professions at the Illinois Institute of Technology has made their extensive collection of professional ethics available online through a grant from the National Science Foundation.

Erratic Impact: Philosophy Research Base
This philosophy web portal, began in 1997 as a research tool for students at Villanova, was expanded and made public by the course instructor, Danne Polk.
