Access Science
An encyclopedic database covering science and technology that includes a comprehensive section on geology and the various earth sciences broken down into many subtopics including geophysics, oceanography, hydrology, and mineralogy (to name a few). Access Science contains encyclopedic articles and research updates as well as study guides, essay topics, biographies and related websites for the field of geology and its related disciplines.

McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science & Technology
A twenty volume encyclopedia covering the broad spectrum of science including the earth sciences. Includes a complete index for the series in volume 20. REF 503 M

Oxford Companion To The Earth
Over 800 concise entries in this encyclopedic reference work on the earth that also includes illustrations and pictures. REF 550.3 O

Smithsonian Earth
Reference work on the planet divided into five categories: planet earth, land, ocean, atmosphere, and tectonic earth. Very extensive use of photographs and illustrations makes this an extremely visual resource. REF 550 E

The Encyclopedia of the Solid Earth Sciences
Comprehensive reference text for all the areas of study within the earth sciences. Encyclopedia geared towards professionals as well as students. REF 550.3 E

Encyclopedia of Volcanos
Encyclopedia covering all aspects of modern vulcanology complete with pictures, illustrations and graphs. REF 551.21 E

Cambridge Guide to Minerals, Rocks, and Fossils
Reference handbook and guide to identifying rocks & minerals-- entries include color pictures, chemical composition, and a listing of where commonly located. REF 552 B

Gemstones of the World
Handbook that covers general background information as well as specific gemstones complete with color pictures and illustrations. REF 553.85 S

National Audubon Society: Field Guide to Weather
Color images of weather and weather-related effects, including clouds, ice, floods, drought, hurricanes, and storms. Entries list weather ranges, conditions, and seasons. REF 551.6 L

Extremely brief profiles (birth, death, honors and awards) of famous scientists. R 509.22 W

Math and Mathematicians
Specialized encyclopedia that spans four volumes. Provides quality basic information on major mathematicians and mathematical concepts in accessible articles which include images, a glossary of related terms, and suggested books for further research. REF 510.92 B

U.S. Geological Survey Homepage
Homepage for the USGS-a "federal source for science about the Earth, its natural and living resources, natural hazards, and the environment."

National Park Service- Geology
Summary geology provided for every National Park (including Hawaii, Alaska, and Puerto Rico). Access to tours, images, maps, and geologic resource summaries in Adobe PDF format.

Geology in the Parks

Virtual online geology tours put together by the U.S.G.S. and the National Parks Service.

Mapping the National Parks
This online collection of roughly 200 historic maps from the Library of Congress documents the history of Acadia, Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon, and the Great Smoky Mountains before they were national parks.

A Tapestry of Time and Terrain: A Union of Two Maps- Geology and Topography
View an interactive, color-coded map of the continental United States that displays the geologic age of different regions. Includes a map key with detail on each geologic time period.

TopoZone
Free interactive USGS topo maps searchable by place name. Also advanced mapping options available to subscribers.

Maptech Mapserver
Access to free USGS topo maps, NOAA nautical charts, navigational photos and aeronautical charts using a searchable database with advanced search features.

National Atlas of the United States-Custom Maps
You can create a wide variety of customized maps including an extensive set of options for geologic maps through layering. Created through the U.S Department of the Interior and the National Atlas of the United States project.

Terraserver
Great resource for USGS aerial and topographic maps (and unlike Google Earth, you do not need to download a program). You can search by address, geographic coordinates, or place name for maps which you can zoom in and out of and can move around to find different places.

Google Earth
"Google Earth combines satellite imagery, maps and the power of Google Search to put the world's geographic information at your fingertips." Provides zoomable satellite images, driving directions, and a template of customizable icons you can use to mark your own map. Requires a download and at least a 128kb/s connection, see system requirements.

Recent Earthquakes in the U.S.
The most recent earthquakes in the United States collected from the Advanced National Seismic System, includes interactive maps and links with information on earthquakes occurring within the last hour, day and week.

Volcanoes of the World
This comprehensive site from the Smithsonian Institute's Global Volcanism Program has listings of current eruptions worldwide, profiles of active volcanos, and information on volcanic regions around the world.

This educational resource page "aims to provide information about volcanos to the public and to complement other informational sites on the web."
