The Merck Index
An encyclopedia of chemicals, drugs, and biologicals including monographs, reactions, tables and various indexes. REF 540 M
Facts on File Dictionary of Chemistry
Definitions of many subject-specific terms and concepts from Inorganic and Organic chemistry. The entries for chemical compounds and elements include their symbols and charges. Element entries also include periodic number and weight. Additional images, molecule diagrams, and charts are offered throughout. REF 540.3 F
Dictionary of Chemistry
Concise dictionary with brief definitions and more complete explanations and examples that often include diagrams, tables, and equations. REF 540.3 H
Dictionary of Organic Compounds
Chemical dictionary that presents details of chemical structure, the physical, chemical and other properties, and leading literature references for many important organic substances. R 547.003 D
Chemical Compounds
This three-volume set lists chemical compounds by their international-standard titles [i.e. SuSO4 is "Copper(II) Sulfate," not "Cupric Sulfate"]. Each entry includes a 3D, full-color model of the compound, a list of common uses & potential hazards, and details how the compund is made. Entries also include: formula; elements included; compound type (salt, acid, base, etc); state; molecular weight; melting, boiling, and freezing points; and soulubility. REF 540 C
VanNostrand's Encyclopedia of Chemistry (5th ed.)
A strong general chemistry encyclopedia, covering everything from chemical elements and compounds to industrial uses of chemistry to lab equipment and materials, with much, much more. The encyclopedia articles are fairly detailed and authored by subject experts in the relevant field or area. Entries include diagrams, charts, images, and cross-references as appropriate. REF 503 V
Macmillan Encyclopedia of Chemistry
Contains a broad range of topics associated with the field of chemistry including biographies of chemists. Also includes a bibliography of resources for each entry. REF 540 M
Online Resources
Online Periodic Charts & Chemistry Tutorials
Scholarly and professional versions of the periodic table from WebElements that contain extensive information about chemical elements.
ChemCool
Another "great chemistry site." Link from Dr. Chamberlain, UCC Chemistry Dept.
Periodic Table of the Elements (with Samples)
This chart is modeled on a real table, with each of the different element "types" (metal, metaliod, nobel gas) given a different wood. Clicking on an element's tile brings up detailed information about the element itself and a selection of samples (images).
Inorganic Chemistry Tutorials
Webpage tutorials, exercises, and examples created by Richard Banks at Boise State University.
Ithaca ChemZone Interactive Chemistry Tutorials
A variety of lessons on core concepts of Inorganic and Organic Chemistry, including chemical bonds, stoichimetry, acids & bases, and the applications of chemistry.
Atom Builder
Build an atom (requires Shockwave), read about the history of the science behind the discovery of the atom, and learn about the work that is still ongoing in the field. Website created by WGBH PBS (New England), link from Dr. Chamberlain, UCC Chemistry Dept.
PeriodicSpiral
Reorganizes the periodic chart as a spiral to demonstrate the relationship of Hydrogen to most elements.
