Verna Mead first came to UCC in 1964 to earn her Associate of Arts Degree. After graduating in 1966, she transferred to the University of Oregon, where she was one of five full time students to graduate in the field of education, and the only female graduate!
After completing her Bachelor’s degree in Education, she continued on to acquire her Masters in Education by 1972. Her education positioned her to start her teaching career at West Elementary School in Sutherlin for two years and then move on to East Elementary School where she taught for twenty three years. She taught second and third graders for both schools.
“I came to UCC for the beginning of my long climb to success, because it was close to home, it was convenient, and it was cost effective for me. These advantages made it much easier for me to raise a family and attend college.” Verna shares that while enrolled at UCC, she met other students with whom she carpooled to attend the University of Oregon, where she finished her education.
