Sue Cooper gets to meet every new employee for the very first time, an aspect of her job that she finds particularly gratifying. “I’m probably the first contact with the new employee,” she said. “It’s awesome,” she said, a word she applied to many aspects of her job.
Sue is a graduate of Umpqua Community College. Her AA degree in business administration hangs above her desk along with her BA in management from Northwest Christian College, a school with which UCC has a degree partnership.
She said “I plugged along” for eight years to get a degree – while caring for a young family. Because of all the time spent at UCC earning her degree, she thought, “What a perfect place to work! I learned that there are a lot of good people here from taking those classes.”
A human resources assistant at the college, Sue faces the critical task of making sure that we all are assigned to the correct position – and salary.
She has lived her whole life in Sutherlin. Her son, David, is studying criminal justice at UCC, and her daughter, Andrea, is married and lives in Tigard, after attending UCC. “Let it be known,” she said, “I think people here are awesome!” – We agree with you Sue!
