Totally focused

Newly-elected student government president Heidi Johnson jumped into her position with both feet and took off running. This bright energetic UCC freshman is determined to represent and support students; all students. "We are a very diverse group of people here, with different needs and interests. I want every one of us to have our needs met," she says with a modest, engaging smile.
Heidi is a "non-traditional student" herself. The Roseburg High School graduate, class of '96, notes that, unlike some students, she is not taking classes to get a high-paying job. "I worked for nine years in customer service, managing cosmetics counters in stores such as Nordstrom's and the Bon," she explains. "Then I realized that getting an education was more important than selling lipstick." Now, majoring in psychology, she cheerfully says that she made more money in cosmetics than she is likely to make until she gets to the doctorate level in her field, but now she feels that her direction in life is much more rewarding. "I'm not sure exactly where God will lead me," she says, "but I'm very interested in child psychology, and I'd love to teach at the university level some day."
Heidi describes herself as very service oriented, perhaps derived in part from her heritage. Her mother, Teri, works in human resources at Mercy Medical, and her father, Reverend Howard Johnson, is the pastor for Bethany Bible Fellowship. UCC staff will recall that he has been the featured speaker for Martin Luther King Day inservice convocations.
Heidi is the first of her family to seek a college degree, and she takes the job seriously. "I'm an extremely type-A personality, very organized and very determined," she says, with disarming warmth. "I have my day-planner filled out through June of 2006, though I'm leaving plenty of space for activities and projects that may come up. And then I'll go to the U of O to get my bachelor's."
She's currently taking 18 credits and plans to take 12 credits during the summer while serving her initial term as student government president. "I'm really looking forward to this opportunity. I want to open avenues for communication for students. And I'd like to see more clubs available to offer fun and useful outlets for various interests. I plan to work hard as president; I've already decided that I won't take 18 credits next fall so that I'll have time to do this job well."
Although she admits that she has a weakness for reading Stephen King novels ("I've read just about everything he's written"), Heidi's full life doesn't include a lot of leisure time. "School is my main hobby," she says cheerfully, "and just chatting with people is really fun for me." She also works part-time at the front desk for Downtown Fitness. "I'm very health-oriented, working out, taking care of my body, eating well...I do love chocolate though."
"Someday I hope to get married and have kids; lots of kids," she says. "But right now I'm totally focused on getting an education and being an effective representative for UCC students."
