TOP program provides opportunities

Advising specialist Steve Burns brings a lot of first-hand experience and commonsense to his position in UCC's counseling department. For starts, if there’s such a thing as a "typical nontraditional student," Steve was one. When he enrolled at UCC in 2000, he had been a high school drop out–twice” (though he went back and got his GED in ‘81) and a professional truck driver for 17 years. "I was ready for a change. I wanted to work with people. I enjoy interacting with people and helping them overcome problems and challenges so I knew I wanted to get into human services."
While earning his associate's degree, Steve served on UCC's substance abuse committee and was president of Campus Crusade. He also was a work study student in the counseling department which reinforced his determination to continue his career in the field of counseling.
He credits the Transfer Opportunity Program (TOP) for helping him go on to the U of O on a Ford Family Scholarship. In his two years there he lived in campus housing, worked in building maintenance and was director of the nontraditional student union. Academically he focused on juvenile delinquency and substance abuse prevention, education and treatment, earning a bachelor’s degree in sociology in 2004.
He was delighted when he was then promptly hired as an advising specialist at UCC. "This is the best job I’ve ever had," he says enthusiastically. "I feel very fortunate." Unfortunately, due to funding reallocations, his part-time position will end in June, but Steve is applying for new openings, hoping to become employed full-time at the college. "There’s nowhere I’d rather work. UCC is like a family."
In addition to his UCC family Steve has two sons. Mike, age 21, is a former UCC student and son Matthew is a sophomore at Riddle High School.
Although working and studying have taken most of his time in recent years, Steve still finds time to engage in his favorite hobbies of fishing and scuba diving. "Crabbing is a completely different sport when you go underwater and catch the crabs by hand," he says, laughing. He also enjoys working with ceramics–“functional art" he calls it. "I never thought of myself as artistic, but I’ve found that I have a knack for it, and it’s therapeutic."
"I’m living proof that getting an education is worthwhile on every level." Steve says. "And more than anything else, I want to help other people find this satisfaction in their lives."

Arm Yourself With Art
“Arm Yourself With Art” is the title of the student art show that is running now through Thursday, June 2 in the Fine Arts Gallery. On the last day of the showing, there will be a closing reception and awards ceremony. Over 100 student artists are participating in the show and are represented in mediums ranging from altered books, drawing, oil painting, photography, watercolor, ceramics and sculpture.

When you stop by to see the exhibit, be sure and vote for the People's Choice award!
