Fate stepped in

UCC’s interim director of community relations Caroline Gober’s lilting, almost musical, speech derives from her bi-lingual upbringing by Thai parents in Western Australia where she was born and raised. "For years, my parents spoke to me only in Thai, and I answered only in English until age 12." she said.
After graduating from high school in ‘91, Caroline entered Curtin University, studying for a double degree in Japanese and marketing. After a couple of years, her schooling was put on hold when she married and earned a full-time job in international marketing for the Western Australian Tourism Commission.
Two years later, she gave birth to daughter, Anisah, now age eight. After her marriage dissolved in 1998, she went back to complete her education. She was then also doing freelance graphic design and marketing from home, when fate (aka Scott Gober) stepped into her life. "I was working late one night and decided to take a break and check out a chatroom on the internet," she said, "and that’s how I met Scott."
Caroline and Scott, a life-long Roseburg resident and general contractor, chatted occasionally for the next six months. "There was absolutely no romantic interest," she insists. That is until he came to Australia to visit friends and ended up spending most of his vacation with her and Anisah. "Then there was romantic interest," she admits, laughing happily. Scott returned home in November, 2000, and she and her daughter came here to visit a month later. "We had a round-trip ticket, but we didn’t use the return part."
The couple was married the following August, and Caroline worked in marketing for Creative Images for two years. Now pregnant and due in August, the interim position in community relations fits into her current plans perfectly.
"I’m very invested in my family," she explains. Someday she would like to teach women and children the art of Pencak Silat ("penchuk seelat"), an Indonesian martial art; she was Australia’s national champion in ‘97. "Perhaps I could teach a couple of community ed classes," she says, noting that she also taught Thai cooking at a community college. Perhaps this bright, multi-talented young woman will become a permanent part of the UCC family after all!

Candidate Forum
On May 4, UCC’s student government, aided by "concerned citizen, Bob Winn" hosted a public forum in Campus Center for the candidates currently running for the Board of Directors. The three incumbents and their challengers were present to introduce themselves and answer questions.

Incumbent Del Blanchard, Zone 4, quoted Ronald Reagan, saying, "I won’t hold my opponent’s youth and inexperience against him." He is running against Chris Hinzmann, plant manager for Charter Communications, who appreciatively noted Blanchard’s 28 years of service on the board, saying that he wants to step up to help shoulder the burden. Lenore Paulsen, Zone 5, a 20 year veteran on the board, said proudly, "We have hired the best president ever, Blaine Nisson." She is opposed by Ron West, retired UCC professor, and Helga Conrad, director of Umpqua Economic Development. John Waldron, at-large incumbent, is being challenged by Tracey DePew, an EMT specialist who worked for UCC for six years, and Elaine Chaney, a family nurse practitioner who also teaches at UCC.

Financial aid recipients
In response to the information that you received about student's signing up for the automated payment on Financial Aid. No one signed up for the automatic payments, this was a transaction that was applied through the efforts of computer services and the business office for a temporary period of time. The students were aware of this feature through the registration post cards and initially at the beginning of Fall term 2004 with a letter explaining the new automated service. We are no longer offering this service at this time. We may be offering the service with the implementation of a new computer system.

As in previous years, the students will be responsible for notifying the cashier to update against any funding that is on the system, or to make other payment arrangements for the 2005/2006 school year.
