It’s great to be home

Terrie Davis, secretary for the Public Safety Dept., has a soft voice and gentle low-key demeanor despite being born and raised in Texas. She was working in El Paso when she met her husband of 27 years, Wayne, and began a life of following him from place to place where ever his promotions in the VA hospital system led them. She has held a wide variety of jobs over the years, which gave her the flexibility and equanimity to cope with her current position which incorporates Fire Sciences, Criminal Justice, EMT and paramedic programs as well as new programs under development. "Doing payroll is somewhat of a challenge," she admits, smiling, "with all of our part-time instructors. But this is such a worthwhile job. Dennis [O’Neill, director of Public Safety] emphasizes that our students are of absolute top priority, and I agree. It’s wonderful to see the results of our work here."
Terrie’s previous work in criminal justice made her a particularly great fit for the job. In Texas she worked with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms; and in Des Moines, Iowa, she worked for the U.S. Marshals, in prison transfers and witness security programs. "Also I type quickly," she added, which is the closest she comes to bragging about herself.
Terrie and Wayne have more or less lived in Roseburg for the past 18 years. "We were transferred to California for a couple of years," she explained, "but we kept our house here. I believe that God brought us home, and we expect to stay here now."
Before the move to California, Terrie worked for the U.S. Forest Service for nearly 12 years. "It was a lot like UCC," she said, "I felt I was part of an extended family. That’s one thing I enjoy here too."
Between them, she and Wayne have six children, four grandkids and another on the way. Daughter Cindy [Norton] graduated with honors from UCC in ‘99 and has a couple of bachelor’s degrees as well. She and her husband Peter live here, so they take part in the Davis’ Game Nights–"We love to just spend time with friends and family, playing board games and dominos and enjoying each other’s company," Terrie says warmly. The couple also enjoys taking road trips, camping ("Umpqua Lighthouse State Park is our favorite"), and going to the coast to stargaze and just watch the waves. Terrie also enjoys music–particularly contemporary Christian tunes–though she says she can’t sing or play an instrument. "Well, I can play the kazoo," she adds, laughing. "It’s fun!"
Now that she and Wayne are getting settled back into life here, she expects to renew volunteer work for United Way and to be more involved in their church, First United Methodist. "It’s great to be home," she says, "and I feel very much at home here at UCC too."
