Kuhlman shows true colors

UCC’s new painter/security/custodian, Scott Kuhlman, describes himself as “just an easy-going, laid-back guy.” His supervisor, Jess Miller, does not entirely agree. “Well, he is easy-going, a great guy,” Jess explains. “But he is also a very hard-worker and exceedingly professional.”
Scott demonstrated his professional painting skills during this interview while continuing to paint the metal gates to the pool with quick precise movements. An amateur would have been liberally spattered with black paint–Scott was virtually spotless.
“I’ve painted most of my life,” he explained, beginning with working with his father who painted professionally in his hometown of Seattle. After graduating from high school in ‘88, Scott continued to paint while spending four years in an apprenticeship program at South Seattle Community College and earning his journeyman’s certification.
Then he was ready for a change and wanted to get out of the big city, so he took up a friend’s offer to housesit his new home in Roseburg. “I felt right at home here,” Scott said, adding that this is a great place to indulge his favorite hobbies of hunting, fishing, camping and hiking. For several years he worked seasonally for area contractors, ran his own painting service, then worked for Mercy Maintenance Services before taking this job. “I really wanted full-time year-round work, and the benefits are good here. My co-workers are great, and I like working close to home, too.”
Scott and his wife Michelle, an office manager for Oak Park Assisted Living, live in Sutherlin with their son, two-year-old Travis. Scott has two older children–Emily, age 12 and Austin, nine–who live nearby and spend lots of time with the family. “We just do regular family things together, go out to eat, enjoy each other’s company,” he says in his easy-going manner.
Another hobby is restoring old cars. Scott’s current project is renovating a 1968 Chevelle. “It’s taken two years,” he says, “But I expect we’ll be cruising in this summer’s [Sutherlin] Blackberry Festival. Look for us there!”
