Utley can “Cowboy Up” with the best

"I truly love teaching," Sandra Utley says enthusiastically. "It’s great to help people learn skills that provide well-paying livelihoods so they can support their families." Sandra is the coordinator and an instructor for UCC’s new Commercial Truck Driving Program.
A native of Tacoma (where she grew up racing dirt bikes), Sandra has lived here for nine years and has been involved with myriad aspects of trucking for more than 18 years. "I’ve done just about everything," she says casually. "I’ve been a chip hauler, a long-haul trucker, hauled big cats up to the Kelsey Valley fire for the Forest Service. For four years I was self-employed in road construction, driving a dump truck and other heavy equipment. My partner and I helped build a lot of the roads around here."
For the past two years she has taught commercial truck driving at Rogue Community College and is relieved to be free of the commute from her home in Lookingglass. She and husband Don, a lineman for Douglas Electric, have a twenty-acre farm with seven quarter horses, a mule and a burro. The couple competes in professional team-roping, and they also train horses and riders. "We do the rodeos, fairs, and we go to Reno for the American Cowboy Team Roping Association competitions."
This active couple also enjoys camping, four-wheeling at the Dunes, fishing and hunting. Don got his elk this year, but he used a gun; Sandra is a bow-hunter–"It’s an extra challenge." They also sometimes guide private hunting parties on horseback excursions.
On the domestic side, Sandra enjoys remodeling their old farm house (registered in 1921 long after it was built) and collecting antiques. She also loves spending time with her step-children, Rosalyn, age 16 and Tanner, 10.
While discussing her home life and personal interests, Sandra repeatedly returned to her favorite subject–the new Commercial Truck Driving Program which will begin in July. "It’s such valuable training. I love it when former students stop by to show off their trucks and tell me how well they are doing. And there’s a tremendous need for drivers. Area employers are helping us provide training, in part because they really need truckers."
This four-to-five-week intensive program combines hands-on and academic training to prepare students to earn Class A CDL certificates. They are trained to be entry-level tractor trailer drivers, pulling 48 foot semis and doubles, competently dealing with safety issues and regulations. The optional fifth week is devoted to special field training; students "test-drive" various kinds of trucks to find the kind of employment they’d prefer. "For instance, they can try driving a chip truck or a logging truck, and get an idea of what the job is really like," Sandra explains.
She notes that there are a number of pre-requisites for participation in the program. Students must be at least 18, and must meet a number of academic, health and legal requirements. "We are happy to help students work through the preparation stages," she says.
