Ready for UCC’s MIS puzzle

Victoria DeVore, the new director of Information Technology (the department formerly known as Computer Services), cheerfully and unabashedly describes herself as a computer geek. In fact, computers have played a dominant role in her personal life as well as molding her career.
“My husband, Garé, and I met through a computer dating service–in fact, we paid for each other,” she said, laughing. The couple, married for seven years, currently live in Brownsville, north of Eugene, while Garé, a contractor, prepares their house for sale. “We are looking for property near Curtin or Drain, which will be midway between where each of us works,” she explains.
For now, she spends the work week here–staying with Kim Gandy, accounting director–and commuting home on weekends. The couple is experienced with such situations–her previous position, working for SunGard SCT (aka “Banner”) involved extensive traveling to places such as Beirut, Istanbul, Cairo and New Zealand. “The traveling got old,” she said. “In 2002 I flew 225,000 miles. That’s one reason I was so happy to find this position.”
Victoria is enthusiastic about helping UCC incorporate its new MIS system. “It’s new to UCC,” she notes, “but this is what I’ve been working on for years, so I’m completely comfortable with it.” She adds that dealing with large computer systems is like working a big puzzle–“and I love puzzles of all kinds.”
She has two daughters: Megan, age 27, is a sergeant in the Army, stationed in South Korea where Victoria recently visited her. Grace, 20, is a pre-med student at the U of O.
Victoria and Garé are long-distance bike enthusiasts and skiers, activities she describes as “very therapeutic. You don’t think of anything but the beauty around you and the wind.” She’s a devoted fan of “Star Wars,” “Stargate” and “Harry Potter” as well as an animal lover.
Above all, Victoria is glad to be at UCC. “I believe strongly in community colleges,” she said. “I wouldn’t be where I am if it wasn’t for Golden West Jr. College in California. I was a single mom, working full-time, but they made it possible for me to get my associate’s and go on to get my bachelor’s at the University of California. Community colleges are essential for a lot of people. And the staff here has welcomed me with open arms. This is where I want to be.”

Know these three questions
Non-medical volunteers can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions of the person:
1. Ask the individual to smile.
2. Ask him or her to raise both arms.
3. Ask the person to speak a simple sentence.
If he or she has trouble with any of these tasks, call 911 immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher. Widespread use of this test could result in prompt diagnosis and treatment of the stroke and prevent brain damage.

Black History Month
February marks the beginning of Black History Month - an annual celebration that has existed since 1926. But what are the origins of Black History Month?

In 1926 the first annual Negro History Week was chose to co-incide with the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln–two men who had greatly impacted the black population.

Over time, Negro History Week evolved into the Black History Month–a four week long celebration of African American history.
