Gallagher is smashing!
Students in Dean Remick’s speech and communications class got a surprise last Friday when renown comedian, Gallagher, taught the class. Gallagher offered, after asking Remick whether he was a good communications teacher and Remick answered with “Huh?”
The class began with an introduction and entrance of the comedian–and a lesson. “Always make an entrance,” he told the class, “create expectations.” (He emphasized this thought later during the speech of one of the students, Sarah–with an H, who as Gallagher put it, “just wandered” to the front of the audience awaiting to speak. He made her return to her seat until properly introduced.)
Gallagher quickly sized up his audience. This included acknowledging a student in the front row (well dressed, well groomed and “obviously here to learn”) and making another student (slouching posture, and “you’re not interested in this class, are you?”) move to the back of the room. He then launched into a 40 minute spirited discussion of public speaking covering topics such as interruptions (illustrated with the late students–who had no idea what was going on); body language and gestures (highlighted with a subtle, yet poignant nose-pick); holding the audience’s interest–from standing on a table to the speech’s content and delivery.
With all of this newfound knowledge (and with a little coaching from the instructor), Sarah–with an H, on her second try remembered that the most interesting thing about her was not that she liked Swedish pancakes–a lot–but that she had once locked her little brother in a suitcase. For 30 minutes. A boisterous round of cheers and applause was awarded to this new revelation.
Gallagher, while not physically armed with his infamous Sledge-O-Matic, did end the class by smashing one popular misconception. When asked–if compared to the really important things in life: family, home, friends–is this class really important, he responded, “Everything is important...if you’re going to do something, do it right.
“Have you ever heard a speech where someone begins by excusing themselves by saying something like ‘You’ll have to excuse me, I’m not a very good speaker’? What that person is really saying is ‘Please excuse me for wasting your time because I didn’t prepare...I didn’t think it was important.’
“If you feel that this class or any of your others aren’t important, then you’re already giving up. You’ll start rationalizing...and it will be easier to give up on other things as well. Do your absolute best in everything you do.”
With that, Gallagher made a grandiose exit, having done the best he could do.
