Children first

Sylvia Metsig is delighted with her new part-time position as secretary of the Ford Family Center. "The hours are perfect to allow me to be a mom as well as employed. And my duties here are all things that I really enjoy doing-working with children, creating on the computer, helping people."
Sylvia is also glad that she and her family are here to stay. "We've moved a lot the past couple of years, back and forth between California and Southern Oregon. But now we're building a house, and we're going to stay put."
Sylvia is looking forward to moving into their new home ("hopefully in June") where she can indulge her interest in interior design and decorating. She also looks forward to raising fruit trees and doing other "minor gardening."
Sylvia and husband Richard, who manages United Rental, have four children-Sara, who will be 12 in March; Stephen, age 9; Andrew, 7; and Alyssa, 6. They share their home with three dogs-Shasta, a shepherd cross; Molly, a lab mix; and Buddy, a dachshund/cocker.
For recreation, the family enjoys swimming, picnicking and simply hanging out together. They are currently looking into various churches in the area, and Sylvia said she looks forward to returning to teaching Sunday school classes.
Sylvia grew up in northern California and graduated from Happy Camp High School. In 1989, she earned her associate's degree in business administration at the College of the Siskyous in Weed.
She worked as a manager at a Ryder truck rental facility before deciding to be a stay-at-home mother. She continued to work at home, doing computer data entry for an imaging system. Now that all her children are in school, she is happy to work at UCC.
"Really, this job is perfect for me, and I hope I'm being helpful," she said modestly.
Connie Dell'Anno, coordinator for the Ford Family Center, confirms that Sylvia is very helpful. "It's been wonderful having her on staff," she said enthusiastically. "She's really getting things organized and pulled together-it's great!"
