Paris, working at UCC agrees with him
Jim Paris, UCC’s new mechanic/groundskeeper, is a quiet easygoing
man whose comfortable demeanor makes him easy to talk to. A Roseburg native, he
was born at Douglas Community Hospital, graduated from RHS in 1974, and still
lives on the street where he grew up, just down the road from his dad’s place.
He and his wife of 27 years, Julie, raise apples, peaches, nectarines, pears and kiwis on their acreage which they sell to stores and fruit stands. On the day of this interview he had brought a huge bag full of juicy kiwis to share with co-workers. Julie also works for KGRV radio.
The couple has three children. Matthew, age 24, works at UPS and participates actively in community theater. “I’ll probably use my Spirit Pass to take him to see “Rumors,” Jim said. Nathan, 21, is studying engineering at OIT, and 13-year-old Mindy attends Umpqua Valley Christian School and is active in sports.
In addition to parenting and work, Jim and Julie are very active in their church.
Previously Jim was a manager, mechanic and fabricator for 13 years at Norris Blueberry Farm. “I was ready for a change,” he said. “In the summer I worked 15 hour days, seven days a week, and in the winter it was dawn to dusk. I wanted more time with my family.” Before that he had spent 14 years as a logger–another time-consuming job.
He’s happy to be working at UCC now. One of the perks he is looking forward to is taking classes now that he is an employee. “I want to take welding, for starts. I looked through the most recent catalog and saw all sorts of classes that look interesting.”
Jim also appreciates his co-workers. “I’m still learning the ropes, and the people here have been great. They are real truthful, but they haven’t been too rough on me, “ he said, smiling.
Festival of Lights Kudos
A heartfelt thanks to Susan McDonald, Ralph Perrin, Steve Cable, Ruth Ann Wilfong and their familes for volunteering at the Festival of Lights. It was a wonderful evening and very busy with an estimated 250 cars in the park during our shift. Wow! ~ Lee Salter
Congratulations Grandma
Inez Moore's first grandchild, Cody Hunter Moore, arrived on 12/15/04 weighing 8 lbs. 2 oz. Inez, Educational Talent Search program assistant, is elated!
Mascot possibilities
Did you know UCC’s has a mascot? Our mascot is a lumberjack fellow with a basketball, not currently used in any college marketing.
The staff has been doing some brainstorming to select a new mascot. Animal suggestions have included included Timberdragons, Timberwolfs, Timbercats and Timber-rattlers and, of course, the Turkeys. More contemporary submissions–thinking of the big explosion in downtown–include the “Blasts,” the “Fire” or the “Bombs.”
Do you have any suggestions? Email Sonia Wright in Community Relations.
MLK Day
The campus will be closed on Monday, Jan. 17, 2005, Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Staff will be working and have an opportunity to attend a program honoring Dr. King and an open forum with Dr. Nisson. An agenda of the day’s activities will be coming out soon.
Twelfth Night
The Vintage Singers, under the direction of Donna Spicer, will be performing their annual Twelfth Night Concert on Friday, Jan. 7 and Saturday, Jan. 8, at 7:30pm at the First Presbyterian Church in Roseburg. Featured works will include pieces by UCC's Dr. Jason Heald.
Tickets may be purchased at the door–$5/person or $12/family.
Susannah Mars concert
UCC is proud to present Susannah Mars in concert with the Umpqua Singers on Monday, Jan. 10 at 7:30pm in the Centerstage Theater.
Ms. Mars is one of the brightest stars of musical theater and cabaret. Ms. Mars has numerous screen credits, including “Freaky Friday,” “Things I Never Told You,” and “Nowhere Man.” Her critically acclaimed debut solo recording, Take Me to the World, was nominated as best CD by the Manhattan Assoc. of Cabaret Artists & Clubs.
