Computers are her hobby

Jeanine Lum has a rather odd background for her job here as part-time Teaching and Learning Center assistant, though neither she nor her co-workers seem to think so.
Born and raised in Florida, she went to the University of Georgia to get her bachelor's degree in Forestry and Wildlife in '85. She went to work for the Southeast Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study and was sent to Hawaii to test wild pig carcasses for disease. This might seem an unlikely route to romance, but that's where Jeanine met her future husband, Tod, a wildlife biologist, and when the job ended he asked her to stay in Hawaii. They married, continuing work in the wildlife/forestry profession for 16 years.
Where do Hawaiians go on vacation? In the Lum's case, Oregon, where Tod had attended OSU. When they decided to move to the Mainland a couple of years ago, Oregon was first choice. "We wanted to provide new opportunities for our children, and we were ready for a change," Jeanine explains.
The couple has two children. Jacob, age 11, is in sixth grade and retains the habit of wearing shorts year-round. "You can take the boy out of Hawaii, but you can't take Hawaii out of the boy. At least he doesn't wear flip flops in the winter now," his mother says.
Jessica, four, attends preschool at UCC's Ford Family Center. "She's learning to hula dance," Jeanine says, laughing at the irony. "We brought her from Hawaii to Roseburg to learn the hula!"
Tod works for Oregon Fish and Wildlife, and Jeanine worked for Barnes & Associates doing watershed assessment before she found this job. She assists faculty with various technical, computer-related tasks such as on-line classes, in-class presentations and other educational projects. "Computer technology has always been an essential part of my work," she explains. "Plus computers are my hobby. I love digital scrapbooking, for instance." Her appreciation and understanding for the teaching profession derives in part from her extensive experience in creating training programs and teaching while in forestry.
Other hobbies the Lum family enjoys include hiking, fishing and bird-hunting with their two German shorthaired pointers. They also share their home with three Jackson chameleons, brought from Hawaii with a permit.
This job is a good fit for Jeanine. Working part-time with summers off helps her balance work and parenting, plus she enjoys the job itself. "I love working with people who genuinely care about education, about bettering the world," Jeanine says enthusiastically.
