Jones finds joy in her job
Joy Jones, instructor and clinical coordinator for the nursing program, brings a wealth of experience and enthusiasm to her work each day.
Born and raised in Douglas County, Joy graduated from Oakland High School. She then went to Good Samaritan Nursing School where she got her diploma and began her career as an intensive care nurse there. In the next 10 years she also worked in a doctor’s office ("I wanted to experience working with patients who weren’t critically ill or injured") and at the VA hospital in Portland. She then went to the U of O Health Sciences to earn her bachelor’s in nursing.
Joy then joined the U.S. Airforce and was stationed a Pease Airforce Base in New Hampshire where she worked for three years in intensive care at the base hospital. Then her life took another dramatic turn. "Here’s a Valentine’s Day story for you," she said, smiling happily. Her long-time friend, Sam Jones got his private pilot’s license and celebrated by sweeping her away for a week’s vacation on Martha’s Vineyard. "I fell in love with him that week," she said. "It’s been almost 23 years, and Sam is still my best friend." Sam was (and still) is an investment advisor.
Some close friends of the couple were moving to Southern California and invited them along. "It sounded like fun," she explained. After two years of intensive care nursing, Joy was ready for a break, so she got a license and became a real estate broker for six years.
The couple then moved to Idaho to be near his folks, and Joy returned to nursing, commuting from Coeur d’Lane to Spokane. In ‘96 they moved back here, and they now live on 15 acres in Cole Valley near Oakland, three miles from her parents who still live in the home where she grew up. They share their home with Max, a border collie rescued from the pound just as his time expired, and Katie, a chocolate lab cross.
Joy worked at Mercy Rehab and Care for seven years, as a floor nurse, resident care manager and CNA instructor. In the fall of ‘03, Sandy Hendy, director of UCC’s nursing program, hired her as a part-time clinical instructor. She also continued to work at Mercy Medical, then, last fall, she took her current full-time position at UCC. Her enthusiasm for the program, her students and the new simulation lab which she’s responsible for, is contagious. "The sim lab is a wonderful tool for training. Students gets hands-on practice doing procedures like starting i.v.s, intubating, emergency childbirth, monitoring vital signs on our state-of-the-art models. I coordinate labwork with the academic work–for instance, when they are learning about diabetes in class, in lab they learn to give insulin."
"Working with students is wonderful. They’re eager to learn, enthusiastic about the job. I want every one of them to be the best–compassionate as well as competent."
For relaxation, Sam and Joy enjoy fishing and crabbing on the coast, golfing, and she loves cooking of all kinds. "Sam won’t take me out to eat. He says, ‘Why bother? You’re the best cook in Douglas County.’" She laughs and adds, "I adore him."
