Family man

Bob Yancey, UCC's new journeyman electrician, has a ready smile and a comfortable, confident presence that makes it seem like he's been working here for years. "This is a great job, and a wonderful bunch of people to work with," he says. "I really enjoy getting to know people; I don't know everyone at UCC yet, but I look forward to meeting all of them."
Bob grew up in Sutherlin, learning basic electrician skills working at the Sign Factory (then owned by his dad) and graduating from Sutherlin High School in 1989. During his senior year he married Lura, and he smiles affectionately as he says, "She's been a good influence on me, since day one she kept me out of trouble."
The newlyweds faced a challenge when Bob joined the Navy after graduation. "It was rough," he admits, "but it strengthened our marriage too." In the Navy "Seabees," (slang for Construction Battalion) Bob worked on restoring and building naval bases around the world, including in the Persian Gulf during the ‘91 Gulf War. He left the service in 1994 as a Third Class Petty Officer.
When he returned home he found jobs in Douglas County scarce, so the young family (now including daughter Sarah) moved to the Bend/Redmond area where he enrolled in (and completed) an electrician apprenticeship program. In 2002 the family (now including daughter Elizabeth) happily returned home to Douglas County, buying a home in Glide. "All of our relatives are here," Bob explains. "And Glide is our favorite town in the whole county."
The family is active in their church, the North Umpqua Bible Fellowship, happily hosting fund-raising yard sales for the church in the summer. "It's fun! You get to know a lot of people that way," Bob says enthusiastically. Hiking, camping and riding motorcycles on the dunes near Reedsport are other popular family activities. Bob also enjoys restoring old cars and has a red ‘78 Firebird (with a small engine & a firm steel frame) promised to Sarah (now 14) as her first car.
"Family is our life," Bob says frankly. Lura is a part-time custodian for the Glide school district, but Bob says her primary interest is being a mother.
He is clearly proud of Sarah who invests many hours each day and much effort in improving her guitar skills, and he cheerfully notes that four-year-old Elizabeth's main hobby is "getting into trouble."

Hey it worked!
Steve Burns, counseling department, reports that when his mother complained of not feeling well, he remembered the “Know these three questions” article in last week’s PWA. As it turned out, the questions helped Steve determine that she was having a stroke and he was able to get her to the hospital for medical attention.
