ASUCC President keeps getting better
A true measure of a leader is how he responds to crisis and adversity, and student government President Jason Bruggeman has proven himself in tough circumstances. He began his presidency with only five student government positions filled, and quickly lost most of the government because of medical, academic and other problems. “I’m the only original ASUCC member, so I’ve had to carry a lot of the load this year,” he admits modestly. “It’s a matter of commitment, which is top priority when people depend on you.”
Jason is the student representative at meetings of the UCC Board of Directors, and various committees including Academic Standards, the Instructional Council and the college Senate. “It’s been a good learning experience on a lot of levels, especially in leadership,” he says.
Leadership is a primary focus for Jason. He coaches football at Freemont Middle School and has also coached lacrosse at RHS and assisted with children’s ministry activities at Hucrest Community Church of God. “I love working with kids,” he says, which explains why he plans to major in secondary education when he graduates from UCC in June. “I’d like to teach high school math and psychology, and eventually I’d like to be a school principal.”
Jason plans to attend Western Oregon University, a choice perhaps influenced by the fact that his girlfriend, Emily, is there. Jason was born and raised here, graduating from RHS in 2002. He notes that in this past year at UCC, even with the added duties of student government, his grades have actually improved. “The more work I have to do, the more focused I am. I actually do better under pressure, though I don’t let stress get to me. You do better if you stay relaxed and keep your sense of humor.”
