Board news
On April 12, Umpqua Community College's board of directors agreed to add five new classes to the curriculum. The Outdoor Recreation program will now include Teaching Rock Climbing and Rescue Diving; the Criminal Justice program will offer Terrorism and Homeland Security; and the Apprentice program will add Introduction to the Trades. Fees were approved for these classes.
UCC president Blaine Nisson informed the board that the U.S. Department of Education has renewed a grant for the Student Support Services/Transfer Opportunity Program. The program will receive $256,000 annually for four years. It serves 160 disabled, low-income and first-generation college students yearly, providing academic, career and personal counseling.
Nisson also announced that Digital Systems Technology student Matt Brady has been chosen as this year's Outstanding Student Scholar. He will be honored by Governor Kulongoski in Salem on April 29.
Director of Nursing Sandy Hendy presented an update of the nursing program noting that it passed a recent accreditation evaluation "with flying colors and a lot of positive comment." She discussed the expansion of the program which includes partnering with Oregon Health and Science University Health Services to provide a four year degree through UCC.
Vice-president for instructional services Berta Dargen informed the board of the results of a state evaluation of the Adult Basic Skills Development Program, which demonstrated that UCC ranks exceptionally high in performance measures. The rate of graduates going on to post-secondary education is more than twice the state average according to ABSD director Brian Turner.
The board approved engaging the law firm Dole, Coalwell, Clark, Mountainspring, Mornarich and Aitken to provide legal services for the college.
    In other action, the board:
• approved hiring one full-time and 15 part-time instructors
• passed the second reading of a tuition increase from $54 to $58 beginning summer term. Out of state and international tuition will be three times the rate of regular tuition.
• approved the second reading of specified fee increases
• agreed to engage Umpqua Roofing Company, Inc. to repair the roof of Wayne Crooch Hall for $45,770.
