Hooked on teaching

"I'm pretty much an open book," Jenny Friedman says cheerily with a warm smile. This seems like an accurate self-assessment. Her healthy, bright demeanor is right up front where everyone can see it.
UCC's new writing instructor moved here from Portland last year when her botanist husband, Samuel, was hired by Oregon's Fish & Wildlife Dept. "This is a great place to live," she says enthusiastically. "We love backpacking, camping, just about any outdoors activity. Maybe we can get in some cross-country skiing now, with this recent weather."
Jenny was raised in southern California which she describes as "horrible! Everyone is on edge all the time." After high school she attended Cal State San Bernardino university for three years, majoring in child psychology. Then she came to the refreshingly honest realization that she didn't have enough life experience to tackle this field. She transferred to nearby Chaffey Community College to get a general associate's degree, then took a year off to work at a bank and a sporting goods store.
She then returned to CSSB to get her bachelor's in English in 93. She worked for the L.A. County Museum, helping with an art therapy program for special needs children. She also worked as a substitute teacher and began to think that teaching was her calling.
She enrolled at Arizona State University and earned her master's degree in English, reading and secondary education in 1997. She and Samuel were engaged at this time, and he got a job in Pendleton. Jenny followed him as far as Portland, where his sister lived. She spent a couple of years teaching for an alternative school, then began teaching at Mt. Hood and Clackamas community colleges. She was hooked on teaching.
She was happy to be hired at UCC last year, and says that she particularly appreciates her co-workers' support. "I feel like I fit in here. Everyone has made me feel very welcome."
She loves teaching writing to students, even when they don't fully appreciate what they learn. "I know that I'm making a difference in their lives. They are learning to express themselves, to convey their thoughts accurately. Even if they don't realize it now, later they will understand that writing is one of the primary ways to measure and demonstrate their level of knowledge and experience."

Division Heads announced

PIE in the sky?
UCC’s new management information system will be known as “PIE,” an acronym for Project Info-Exchange. PIE was suggested by Terry Tillman, enrollment services. Nice job Terry.

Governance Task Force
You are invited to attend on open forum on governance task forces. Dr. John Keyser, former President of Clackamas Community College and expert/author in this field will be the featured speaker. The forum will be on Tuesday, April 19. Watch for time and location in the next PWA.

College Road is officially Umpqua College Road
All correspondence should now be addressed to Umpqua College Road. It will take some time to change all college stationary and brochures, but you can help by using the new address today.

Committee wants a new name
The Conference on Aging Planning Committee has asked for suggestions for a new name. Many names have been suggested-most of them facetiously. Interestingly, the following were sent by people who are no spring chickens themselves: "Older than Dirt Conference," "I was at Lincoln's Inauguration Conference," "Alternative Survival Strategies: Swimming In A Youth-Oriented Society," "Damn The Burritos; Full Speed Ahead!" "Mom And Dad Do It Better," "COOF" (pronounced cough)-"Conference on Old Fogies" and, my favorite, "Conference on Progressive Return to the Primeval Ooze." Ok, that was entertaining, but now could we have some serious suggestions? Please email Cathryn.Feral@umpqua.edu. Thank you!

Alumnist in concert
Sarah Roth Vanegas, a UCC alumni, will be presenting her OSU senior piano recital "Music of the Americas" on Saturday, April 9 at 7:30pm at the downtown library. The music is selected from calypso-tango inspired rhythms of Latin American composers from Cuba and Brazil and syncopated rhythms of North American composers.

Sarah is the daughter of recent UCC retirees George and Virginia Roth. For more information, call 672-6174. This event is free.
